Free software

Free software is software that gives its users certain freedoms. Free software does not mean zero price. Free software is not freeware.[1]

[edit] Definition

The four freedoms sum up the Free Software Foundation's definition of free software:[2]

  • Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.
  • Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs.
  • Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
  • Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

This means that free software needs to have its source code licensed under a free source code license and its media under a free media license.
