Angband is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Angband is a rogue-like game derived from Umoria. It is dual licensed under the GNU General Public License and the Angband licence.[2]

Angband is a free, single-player dungeon exploration game where you take the role of an adventurer, exploring a deep dungeon, fighting monsters, and acquiring the best weaponry you can, in preparation for a final battle with Morgoth, the Lord of Darkness.[3]

The game revolves around exploring a 100-level dungeon, in which the player seeks to amass enough power and equipment to ultimately defeat Morgoth. A new level is randomly generated each time the player changes levels, which gives Angband great replay value: no two games are the same.

Angband gameplay is combat and tactics based, with inventory management as an important aspect of gameplay. Successful Angband games can last for weeks.

Originally, Angband was released under the non-free Moria/Angband license. This license made it impossible to legally package the game with many GNU/Linux distributions, and did not specifically allow users to change the source code or redistribute changed versions. Due to these and other issues with this license, Angband maintainer Robert Rühlmann began an initiative to relicense the game under both its original license as well as the GNU GPL in the year 2000.[4] This initiative was completed in 2009.[5] Angband is now dual-licensed, meaning that it is available under either the terms of the GPL or the "now-archaic" Moria/Angband license.[6]

Angband also includes 2 graphical sets, one of which "may be redistributed and used for any purpose, with or without modification", and the other which is licensed under the CC-BY 3.0 License.[1]
