Ryzom is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Ryzom (also known as The Saga of Ryzom) is a 3D MMORPG game. Starting as a commercial, proprietary game, a commercial success didn't follow and the game has been released as completely free software, including the server code and media[6], in a campaign called Free Ryzom! This has been seen as one of the biggest contributions to free software gaming.[7] The game is now free to play with most content accessible, with an optional subscription for covering the maintenance costs. It has won 2005 reader's choice best story award.[8]

The game is very well playable without subscription, though it adds a few advantages that a non-casual player may find very useful. These include:[9]

  • higher level cap (250 vs 125)
  • four mounts (as opposed to one)
  • permanent experience catalyzer (leveling twice as fast)
  • other minor privileges

Ryzom features PvE, consentual PvP, crafting, advanced mob AI (such as carnivores attacking herbivorous herds), dynamic environment (with changing weather and seasons), 4 playable races (so called homins)[10] and a classless RPG system.[6]

There exists an extensive number of associated projects and web resources, such as Ryzom Commons[11] – a repository of free-licensed resources related to the game. These include the game assets and user contributed media, such as screenshots, that can be used e.g. at the official Wiki. Another interesting project is Ryzom Armory[12] – a website offering detailed info on individual players, guilds (only those who explicitly make their info public), the game world etc.

The game takes place on a living plant-like planet named Atys, which is composed of several layers, with players being able to only explore the surface and a small portion of the Upper Prime Roots.[13] Aside from homins, there are two mysterious factions that seek to rule over the planet: Kami and Karavan.[14] Kami are magical beings living in harmony with the nature, with collective consciousness, travelling freely through the land and looking over the plant kingdom.[15] Karavan, on the other hand, is a group of anthropoid beings in black suits, who possess highly advanced technology, and worship the goddess Jena. Players, representing homins, interact with both factions.[16]
