PokerTH was started in 2006 by Felix Hammer and Florian Thauer. Early releases concentrated on local Texas Hold 'Em games against computer-controlled opponents.

Version 0.5, released in 2007, introduced network and Internet play. Later releases added a dedicated game server, IPv6 support, online ranking games, translations and support for up to ten players.

In 2011, PokerTH was relicensed from the GNU GPL to the [[GNU Affero General Public License|GNU AGPL]].

Android support was introduced during the 0.9 series, and version 1.0 added further Android improvements, log-file analysis and major server changes.

Version 1.1.2 was released on September 1{{st}}, 2017.

Development continued with the 2.x series and became particularly active again in 2026.
