According to the manual the game utilizes some CC BY-NC assets, e.g., https://github.com/Espyo/Pikifen/blob/1.0.0/manual/content/credits.html#L172 or https://github.com/Espyo/Pikifen/blob/1.0.0/manual/content/credits.html#L186.

: I would like to add that, even if the assets were freely licensed, they're all too similar to the proprietary Pikmin games to be actually libre. Same characters, same creatures, same fonts, basically a lot of the things seen are the same and it's a clear violation of copyright, trade dress, even trademarks. It is a free and open-source engine/game, with gameplay very similar to the Pikmin games, in that leaders can whistle and throw Pikmin, Pikmin can carry objects, and so on. The idea is for fans to create their own content (enemies, areas, etc.), while the engine itself handles the game logic (like physics, scripting, and so on) as well as reading the game data to turn it all into something playable. That said, the project also comes with some base content, so players can experiment with its features right away.
Wake to Hell is an interactive story game, self-proclaimed walking simulator, about a former surgeon, Lukifer Dredd, coming back to the hospital, only to realize something dark had occurred, then attempting to piece together just what happened. Being based on a webcomic, it shares similar themes of mental distress and plot connections. It was also made as a way to practice programming philosophies inspired by Drummyfish.

The game provides builds for Windows and GNU/Linux, utilizing mainly SDL2 for frontend code, but providing use of Raylib and SAF as well, although due to the game's in-development state, they have been left outdated.

Gameplay
Wake to Hell is more about exploration and storybuilding than anything else. You walk around many locations in Limetown, emerging from your house, investigating oddities, anomalies, and generally interesting things around the area. Nearly all pleces you could be, there's something to look at or interact with. The main things to look for are "artifacts", key items that, strangely, affect certain things in the world. The absence or presence of them, as well as the order in which they're found, are also factors in what may happen. There are also other things around, like books or simple background objects you can <i>Gesture</i> with.

Copyright Problem
Before Alpha Build 4's release, Wake to Hell came bundled with a file called "WTH.S3M", an edited version of Big Jim's Wake to Hell. As of Alpha Build 4, it is no longer bundled as a replacement MIDI was made. The January 10, 2024 "Copyright Exodus" completely purged it and any other possible offending material from the source code and game.
Currently, the game is under development with only three levels and a basic moveset, alongside the aforementioned collectibles and enemies. There is also a level editor program, mwjedit, written with ncurses made for the game.

Gameplay
Playing as the titular Mr. Wendigo who is embarking on a quest to reach some dunes with mysterious gemstones ‒ those he's not interested in ‒ out of sheer boredom, you run and jump through several levels, encountering collectibles and baddies. There are green gems, health pickups, as well as "runes" that grant Wendigo special abilities, although they are hard to come across.

Anarch is a completely public domain, free software, suckless 90s-style anarcho-pacifist Doom-like libre FPS game. It was created by drummyfish, completely from scratch. The game's aim is to experiment with a different game development philosophy.

About
Anarch is made for entertainment but also as a manifesto of certain philosophies and ideas, including suckless programming, extreme portability, anti-copyright, selflessness and anarcho-pacifism.

The game is a "pseudo 3D" first person shooter, like Doom, and consists of 10 levels. The graphics uses a 256 color palette and is a little simpler than that of Doom, having e.g. no textures on floor and ceiling, no vertex maps and using just 32x32 pixel images. The engine uses software rendering and 2D raycasting for rendering. There are multiple enemy types, weapons and items to pick up. Music is 8-bit and procedurally generated, utilizing so called bytebeat.

Features
Some of the aspects of the game worth mentioning are:

* Extremely small size, being able to fit into 200 KB, including all assets.
* Very low hardware demands, being able to run on 40 MHz embedded CPUs.
* No library dependencies – The core of the game is written in pure C without any specified I/O, which is left for each platform's frontend to implement.
* Implementation simplicity – no build system is needed, only a single file needs to be compiled. The whole source code has ~12k lines of code.
* All assets are baked into the source code, so no filesystem is required for the game to run correctly.
* Extreme portability thanks to the above. Official ports exist for PC, terminal, web browser and embedded consoles like Pokitto and Gamebuino Meta.
* Made completely from scratch with only free software, including the engine, assets and media.
* Completely public domain status, made completely from scratch by a single developer and released under CC0 (with an additional waiver of patents and rights).
* A number of official mods already exist such as an HD mod, demo support (recording gameplay), a CRT screen simulation, a Freedoom asset swap, and an online cooperative mod.

I marked the page for deletion because of this. -Blitzdoughnuts (talk) 01:04, 26 September 2024 (CEST)
:So the assets themselves (images, sound) are libre, but the format they use are proprietary? Interesting. I don't, however, see the license of proprietary tools to create said assets as a showstopper as long as the tools are not directly required to use the final product (play the game). I bet a lot of proprietary tools have been used to create lots of libre assets through the years. --Fiver (talk) 21:50, 26 September 2024 (CEST)
::Strictly speaking it is an issue because free software (and by extension any free work) must allow not only use but also modification, studying and redistribution, AKA the four basic freedoms. That is what distinguishes it from mere freeware. It's fine if the work was created with proprietary software but it must further on be modifiable with free software only. I think many free software repositories have this as a rule (don't quote me on it but I think you will find something along these lines in GNU, Debian and so on). --Drummyfish (talk) 01:49, 29 September 2024 (CEST)
:::I want to highlight the difference between permission to modify and facilitation to modify. Permission is determined by the license, and facilitation is determined by the availability of tools. To make an informed decision I would need to see sources both for the claim that assets must be modified using only libre software for the game to be considered libre, and for the claim that many software repositories have this as a rule. I'm not saying you're wrong, and I'll gladly read relevant links you can provide on this matter, I just don't recognize that the availability or license of the tools would be a factor when determining if the final products are considered libre or not. Besides, any libre text editor or libre hex editor can be used to modify any file (like assets or software). The precision may not be very good, but I can't imagine any requirement regarding such precision or even usability. --Fiver (talk) 19:05, 30 September 2024 (CEST)
::::I'm kinda tired so you win I guess.--Drummyfish (talk) 17:49, 1 October 2024 (CEST)

:::::Freedom isn't just about licenses; we also require that games publish source code, right? Libregamewiki:Article policy isn't crystal clear on this but it seems implied. I don't know how difficult editing the discussed format is, but if it's impractical with free tools, specifically because people usually use proprietary tools, then I don't think it's unreasonable to consider the game nonfree and delete the page for now. If it's merely slower or less convenient with free tools, then I think the page should stay. If something is naturally impractical to edit, and not because of any missing information or source code, then I think that's fine. Even if the game isn't acceptable now, the information needed to read a data format is probably a good step towards the information needed to modify that data format, so the game could be acceptable once free tools can modify the data. --Jacob K (talk) 11:15, 29 January 2025 (CEST)

Use of recognizably copyrighted assets?
This is something that's bugged me with this game, it uses assets strikingly similar to, if not exactly, the ones from the original Pacman in arcades. I believe these are copyrighted by Namco, or at least restricted of use in some way. The level grid even looks identical to something you would see in the original, and these assets are included in not just the package, but the source code as well. -Blitzdoughnuts (talk) 10:14, 9 August 2024 (CEST)
: Yes, also pac-man is a trademark, not mentioning that naming the game exactly the same as the original is also pretty weird, plus it would likely violate trade dress etc. Could be a deletion candidate. --Drummyfish (talk) 13:01, 9 August 2024 (CEST)

: I agree the name is trademark-infringing, but I think it's plausible that there's not a copyright problem here. The designs of the sprites are very simple, and the design of the maze itself is functional. I don't know if trademark infringement is enough to warrant deleting a game. Compare to Secret Maryo Chronicles (slightly less clear case of trademark infringement). It would be good if Libregamewiki:Article policy addressed trademarks specifically. --Jacob K (talk) 07:32, 29 January 2025 (CET)

Blatant use of non-free assets
I'm stating this again, this time with a bit more clarity, that this game clearly is not just riffing on Namco's Pacman, but might as well be copying straight from it. I've taken a deeper look into the game and compiled a list of what exactly is being infringed:

* The level grid's rendering and layout, the design of Pacman, the ghosts, some of the fruits, and every sound is copying the original game to a T. This all is likely copyrighted or violating trade dress, naking these non-free.

* The "Cheapmot.TTF" font, named Cheap Motel, is listed as Shareware at DaFont and Fonts4Free, and "Free for Personal Use" at 1001FreeFonts and DaFontFree. FontMeme says it's free for commercial use, but says shareware right underneath the font preview. The font is likely shareware, and is not libre.

* The game uses the exact names of the 4 ghosts (Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde) and the titular Pacman in-game. These are likely subject to trademark or copyright violations. These names in particular are also used inside the source code (see src/constants.h), but those may or may not be liable.

Unless the game, considering at least its source code is libre, can be liberated with unique assets and possibly a redesign of the maze, or the "labyrinth", I don't think this game is libre. -Blitz2nuts (talk) 02:33, 29 January 2025 (CEST)
: Excellent summary of many things that could be a problem. I don't agree that all of them are actually a problem, but I agree on the sounds and the font, so I'm in agreement with a deletion. --Jacob K (talk) 17:16, 29 January 2025‎ (CET)

Freedoom is a project aimed to create free data replacements for the Doom and Doom II IWAD files, as Phase 1 and Phase 2, as well as a deathmatch map pack IWAD named FreeDM. Combined with the GPLed Doom Source (such as PrBoom or GZDoom), this makes a completely free (as in speech) game. The data is licensed under the Modified BSD License. Episode 4 of Phase 1 is the Cacoward winning Double Impact which was donated by its creators. The project is aiming for a more direct science fiction setting to differentiate it from Doom.

A few forks exists, namely Satanic Infestation, which strives to maintain a hellish theme, GZFreePunk, which utilizes GZDoom specific features, and the custom Lotan's Tomb. The game previously required a Boom-compatible source port, but has subsequently been made compatible with vanilla Doom.

LibreQuake is a free software data replacement for Quake 1 in the spirit of Freedoom and Blasphemer, after the previous Open Quartz got stuck in early development. Unlike Freedoom it does not aim for full vanilla compatibility except for Episode 0. To play the other episodes a limit-removing source port like Quakespasm, Ironwail or vkQuake is therefore required. It was founded 2019, using the permissive Modified BSD License and aims to expand on the Lovecraftian theme of the original Quake. It is currently missing many levels in some episodes as well as some sounds, and is working on finishing its models.

Rejected games list is a list of games which were rejected to have articles in the Libregamewiki for not complying with the article policy, but for which it is likely that somebody will try to add them or do time-consuming research about their freeness (or there is a significant hope of liberation, e.g. it is apparently non-free only because it has been derived from a then-non-free work).

Note that the licenses of a game can change, and that a game may be put here erroneously, so being on this list does not mean the game is rejected forever: if you think a listed game actually is free, you can start a discussion on the talk page.

In the meantime if you do find a game to be non-free in your research, be sure also to remove it from Libregamewiki:Suggested games when you add it here. Just in case.
:That does not make the game non-free. GNUbie (talk) 17:36, 18 August 2013 (CEST)
:: Section 1 of the Open Source definition says: "The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale." So, assume I bought a copy of the game with the source code. Since I am not allowed to give it to my neighbor, this is not free software.
:::If you're not allowed to give it to your neighbor, it's not free software, sure. But if they only give the source code to paying customers, that's ok. (The customer must be allowed to pass it along.) GNUbie (talk) 19:05, 18 August 2013 (CEST)
::::Selling code is okay with free SW, it doesn't violate anything, however at the same time the source code has to be available to anyone for free in order to respect freedom to study and modify. So the question here is whether the source code is available somewhere else for anyone. If the source is really freely licensed, anyone would be able to legally host (redistribute) it somewhere for free. If this is not allowed, the license is not free. --Drummyfish (talk) 08:34, 22 January 2019 (CET)
OpenArena is a FPS game intended to be a free replacement for the proprietary Quake III Arena. Both the media and the game are licensed under the GPLv2.. The OpenArena project was established on August 19, 2005, the day after the id Tech 3 GPL source code release. A "mission pack" add-on is also planned, to take advantage of the GPL released Quake III: Team Arena source code.

Gameplay
Due to the game's heritage, the gameplay of OpenArena plays almost identically to that of Quake III Arena. The player scores frags to win the game, to score a frag the player has to slay an opponent, either a computer controlled "bot" or a human player. There are a variety of different weapons designed for different situations, such as a rocket launcher, shotgun, railgun, gauntlet, chaingun, and BFG. There are also a variety of collectibles available on the maps such as health and armour upgrades and objects that gives the player special abilities such as the notorious Quad Damage which increases the effectiveness of the player's weapon.

The maps are very varied, some of them set in a science fictional environment, some in gothic temples, some in massive fortresses, and some in lava landscapes. These maps can also have different interactive objects such as lifts and jump-pads. The gameplay is very fast and requires skill to be successfully played against other players on the Internet.

The game has multiple playing modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament, and Capture The Flag (all of these modes are from Quake III), Version 0.76 ported modes and weapons from Quake III's Team Arena that also ran under the same libre engine, such as Elimination, CTF Elimination, Double Domination, and Last Man Standing.

OpenArena has undergone testing to make sure that it is compatible with Quake III modifications and maps - to allow them to be run on a free game as well. Since OpenArena is still incomplete, many maps and mods are not yet compatible. A list of mods verified to work in OpenArena can be found here: http://openarena.wikia.com/wiki/ModCompat.

OpenArena has been advertised as a "sexy" first person shooter and warns that some models are near nude (only covered with tight clothing or hair), in addition to the game's violent theme, it is "not appropriate for children." The various bots and player skins are just as varied as the map design, some being science fictional, gothic, anime, military, and fantasy based. Unlike the original Quake III or Unreal Tournament there is no back story explanation of why the combatants are in the arena and why they are fighting.

Reception
The game is one of the most popular free software first person shooters, particularly among fans of the original Quake III. It has also been praised for its portability and ability to run on older hardware. Internet play has also been praised, as well as the amount of players found on the average OpenArena server. The game has also been credited for its creativity in bot design, rather than sticking to more traditional tropes. OpenArena is also popular on the Apple Macintosh, with one reviewer praising it as one of the best free games for the Mac, noting that it is only a little bit behind contemporary commercially funded games for the PC and consoles in terms of graphics and artificial intellgence. OpenArena has been used as a platform for computer science scholarly work. A few examples include streaming graphics from a central server, and visualizing large amounts of network data.

Development
They have a roadmap, which details their plan for future version of the game. They also have a development blog for the project.

A "reboot" codenamed "OA3" has been mooted, with the aim to replace the current mishmash of art styles with a unified theme, "something more manga inspired", while also hoping to raise graphics and performance standards.

Version history
*Version 0.8.0 released on September 19th, 2008. However, it was pulled because of licensing issue.
