Im not sure, but isnt game maker 6.1 nonfree? Potatoxel (talk) 16:03, 4 April 2022 (CEST)
:If I'm not wrong, both the modern GameMaker (Studio) and the old Game Maker engines are all rights reserved, giving the game at least a bit of non-free code and data. The game would probably fit better if the GDevelop remake comes to fruition. -Blitzdoughnuts (talk) 05:58, 23 August 2024 (CEST)

Game has several freedom issues
I've downloaded and played this game, and with that and some research I've come to the conclusion that this game is very problematic to have here.
* The game itself is made in Game Maker 5 (incorrectly stated as Game Maker 6.1), a proprietary engine.
* The game is based on an example project "1945" with no clear license. Assuming the engine's bundled assets, including examples, are freeware, this means the game's code was relicensed invalidly.
* Sources for non-original assets are missing or unclear, e.g. sound effects (especially OW!.wav and Ammo.wav) or fonts (including a fancy serif font, a sci-fi font, and the proprietary Comic Sans MS).
This is concerning for a libre game to have. Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking but I had to sift through the details to see just how much is wrong here. -Blitzdoughnuts (talk) 22:25, 1 January 2025 (CET)

Wake to Hell is an interactive story game, self-proclaimed walking simulator, about a former surgeon, Lukifer Dredd, coming back to the hospital, only to realize something dark had occurred, then attempting to piece together just what happened. Being based on a webcomic, it shares similar themes of mental distress and plot connections. It was also made as a way to practice programming philosophies inspired by Drummyfish.

The game provides builds for Windows and GNU/Linux, utilizing mainly SDL2 for frontend code, but providing use of Raylib and SAF as well, although due to the game's in-development state, they have been left outdated.

Gameplay
Wake to Hell is different from many mainstream games; instead of constant action and pushing of the player's ability, it is more about exploration and storybuilding.

You walk around many locations in Limetown, emerging from your house, investigating oddities, anomalies, and generally interesting things around the area. Nearly all pleces you could be, there's something to look at or interact with. The main things to look for are "artifacts", four key items that, strangely, affect certain things in the world. The absence or presence of them, as well as the order in which they're found, are also factors in what may happen. There are also other things around, like books or simple background objects you can <i>Gesture</i> with.

Because of the game's slower pace, discovery is key. Secrets may also be found, but where they are is up to the player to see.

Copyright Issue
Before Alpha Build 4's release, Wake to Hell came bundled with a file called "WTH.S3M", an edited version of Big Jim's Wake to Hell. As of Alpha Build 4, it is no longer bundled as a replacement MIDI was made. The January 10, 2024 "Copyright Exodus" completely purged it and any other possible offending material from the source code and game.
Miloslav Číž (drummyfish) is a libre game developer, he studied computer science (focused on computer graphics), creates public domain art and supports free culture in general. He has contributed to various free projects, most notably OpenMW, created a number of tools, libraries (small3dlib, tinyphysicsengine, smallchesslib, ...), demos and games, most notably Anarch and SAF. He advocates for free software, true minimalism and simplicity, i.e. Unix Philosophy, KISS, suckless etc. He now mainly programs in C. He opposes proprietary software, capitalism, open source, bloat, pseudominimalism and any kind of censorship.

LibreIkemen is a libre asset pack for the free and open source Ikemen-GO engine, which itself is a remake of the M.U.G.E.N engine. The asset pack was to contain a minimal screenpack GUI, replacements for most in-game FX, and a character and stage that both use assets from another game the author works on. The goal is to be able to remove the requirement of distributing the engine with Elecbyte's proprietary screenpack.

All assets in the pack are available under the Creative Commons 0 license.

Cancellation
On September 24th 2024, blitzdoughnuts decided to cancel the project and add the raw assets to the repo because the Ikemen GO engine "requires the use of MUGEN's proprietary format of sprites and sounds" and lacks both an alternative way to provide assets and a libre asset editor, which he believes violates one of the four freedoms. Despite this, the assets remain publicly available
Anarchic Brawl is a work in progress free software fighting game and fighting game engine inspired by Ikemen GO.

The engine is made in a suckless way: characters and stages are compiled into the game itself, and asset usage, like sprites or sounds, are dependent on the frontend used. All code is low level, meaning custom characters can easily access game variables and other fighters' variables. By default, there is no main menu. Fights are started from the terminal or command line, with parameters declaring what fighters there are, the gamemode, and other match settings.

The game reuses assets from LibreIkemen, a formerly active project for liberating Ikemen GO's assets by the same author.
Wake to Hell is an interactive story game, self-proclaimed walking simulator, about a former surgeon, Lukifer Dredd, coming back to the hospital he feared to finish what was left to be done. The game, like the webcomic it is based on, is a commentary on mental health and workplace stress.

Luanti (formerly “Minetest”) is a Minecraft-like voxel sandbox engine. It is an engine that allows different voxel-based games to run on it. It's for games in which the world is made out of cubes and the player runs in the environment and manipulates it, preferably by digging and building blocks, collecting items, crafting, and so on. It can be played alone or online with other players.

Games
Most games for Luanti are open-ended sandbox games focusing on creativity. Most of them involve digging and placing blocks, but that isn't the only thing the games include.

Since version 5.8.0, Luanti no longer comes with “Minetest Game” preinstalled, as the developers wish to promote the concept of Luanti as an engine for voxel games. The main “selling point” of Luanti is the support for various other voxel games and modding. The community has developed a vast library of mods and games over the years, but some of these games might be noteworthy enough for their own article in this wiki.

See :Category:Luanti games for a list of Free games in Luanti.

How to start
The Minetest Wiki has a “Getting Started” guide, and there is a community-made tutorial mod on ContentDB. Players of Minecraft or similar will likely be familiar from the get-go.

Once you're familiar with the game, you can either download one of many community-created games and/or mods from ContentDB and play singleplayer, or join a multiplayer server. Luanti provides a built-in ContentDB download menu and an automatic multiplayer addon downloader, making things much easier.

The current potential M.U.G.E.N. successor.

I.K.E.M.E.N. started off as an open-source reimplementation of the M.U.G.E.N. engine compatible with not only all of it's previous resources, but coming with it's own set of unique features, almost all of which were never released on any of the latest M.U.G.E.N. builds.

While the last build of the original I.K.E.M.E.N. was posted in 2017, it was succeeded by I.K.E.M.E.N. Plus, which in turn was succeeded by I.K.E.M.E.N. Go recently, which is a "Google Go Programming Language" reimplementation of I.K.E.M.E.N. Plus that is still maintained by the original authors.
: Ikemen GO is pretty nice, but it's not exactly libre in its entirety. It still comes with Elecbyte's CC-BY-NC assets by default, and it would really benefit from a free data replacement like Freedoom. Once some libre stuff is made for the engine, it could probably get it's own page, who knows? -blitzdoughnuts (talk) 22:28, 20 July 2024 (EST)
Back in August I marked the game Pacman for deletion due to the assets that come with the game being incredibly similar to, if not straight from Namco's own game. I'm surprised to see that the page is still up after some months. I know LibreGameWiki is rather slow moving, but I figured something like this would've had someone investigating the game further, seeing how fit it is, if at all, to stay here. -Blitzdoughnuts (talk) 03:34, 18 December 2024 (CET)

Wake to Hell is an interactive story game, self-proclaimed walking simulator, about a former surgeon, Lukifer Dredd, coming back to the hospital he feared to finish what was left to be done. The game, like the webcomic it is based on, is a commentary on mental health and workplace stress.

Wake to Hell is an interactive story game, self-proclaimed walking simulator, about a former surgeon, Lukifer Dredd, coming back to the hospital he feared to finish what was left to be done. The game, like the webcomic it is based on, is a commentary on mental health and workplace stress.

I should probably mention that VoxeLibre has way too many similarities to Minecraft, even more than Minetest Game. For example, the HUD resembles Minecraft's, the mobs (Zombie, Skeleton, Spider, etc) also resemble Minecraft's corresponding mobs, game mechanics and structures (like the underwater Guardian temples, villages, or certain biomes like the Mushroom biome) are based on, if not taken from, Minecraft, and so on, so on. These could prove problematic to VoxeLibre's legal status, even with the deviations it's taken from Minecraft.
Infinite Tux is a 2D platformer game based on the source code of Infinite Mario. It's a side scrolling platformer like SuperTux, taking more inspiration from its NES inspiration, with the added gimmick of procedurally generated levels every playthrough.

While the source code of the original Infinite Mario was released as libre, the assets could not due to being copyrighted by Nintendo. As such, all of the original Nintendo assets have been replaced with libre assets.

Origin
The game was originally written and released by Markus Persson(Notch) of Mojang as Infinite Mario Bros using Nintendo assets.
Notch released the source code as public domain with a note stating that someone should replace the assets with libre assets.

Below is an excerpt.

Readme for Infinite Mario Bros
10:47 AM 12/25/2006

I stopped working on this project for three reasons;
#I had to focus on my main project. This was just a fun side project.
#I didn't feel comfortable abusing copyrighted material for non-personal use, and neither should you.
#The competition this was an entry for ended.

I'm releasing the source code for this project since I've gotten quite a bit of email with really
good suggestions on how to make this better, but I don't have the time to implement them myself.

The code (/src/) is released as public domain, so you can do with it what you wish.
The art (/res/) is still copyright nintendo, so it's almost certainly NOT ok to do anything at all with it. Ask nintendo.

And, please, if you're going to make a bigger project out of this, please consider replacing the art with legal art.

Since this note, all of the Nintendo assets were replaced with CC and GPL assets and and thus Infinite Tux was born.

Anarch is a completely public domain, free software, suckless 90s-style anarcho-pacifist Doom-like libre game. It was created by drummyfish, completely from scratch. The game's aim is to experiment with a different game development philosophy.

About
Anarch is made for entertainment but also as a manifesto of certain philosophies and ideas, including suckless programming, extreme portability, anti-copyright, selflessness and anarcho-pacifism.

The game is a "pseudo 3D" first person shooter, like Doom, and consists of 10 levels. The graphics uses a 256 color palette and is a little simpler than that
of Doom, having e.g. no textures on floor and ceiling and using just 32x32 pixel images. The engine uses software rendering and 2D raycasting for rendering.
There are multiple enemy types, weapons and items to pick up. Music is 8bit and procedurally generated (utilizing so called bytebeat).

Features
Some of the aspects of the game worth mentioning are:

* Extremely small size, being able to fit into 200 KB, including all assets.
* Very low hardware demands, being able to run on 40 MHz embedded CPUs.
* No library dependencies – The core of the game is written in pure C without any specified I/O, which is left for each platform's frontend to implement.
* Implementation simplicity – no build system is needed, only a single file needs to be compiled. The whole source code has ~12k lines of code.
* All assets are baked into the source code, so no filesystem is required for the game to run correctly.
* Extreme portability thanks to the above. Official ports exist for PC, terminal, web browser and embedded consoles like Pokitto and Gamebuino Meta.
* Made completely from scratch with only free software, including the engine, assets and media.
* Completely public domain status, made completely from scratch by a single person and released under CC0 (with an additional waiver of patents).
* A number of mods already exists such as an HD mod, demo support (recording gameplay), a CRT screen simulation, and a Freedoom asset swap.

* A number of mods already exists such as an HD mod, demo support (recording gameplay) or CRT screen simulation.

Doom (stylized DOOM) is a first person shooter game developed by id Software in 1993 to critical acclaim, perservering over the years due to its technical prowess, large modding scene and near-timeless qualities.

The engine's source code was released by id Software under the GPLv2. It has been used to create several "source ports" that use the game's data, like PrBoom or Chocolate Doom. However, the data remained proprietary, which inspired projects like Freedoom to create libre assets for these FOSS engines to use, to liberate the game entirely.

Development history
* The first beta (0.27) of what is now called Secret Maryo Chronicles was released in January 2003 under the name Super Mario Clone FX. This release featured characters, enemies and sounds ripped directly from Super Mario World, with a new game engine and original levels.
* In version 0.4 (February 2003), an in-game level editor was added, making it possible to pause the game, edit the level, and then finish the level in its changed form.
* In version 0.95, the name was changed to Secret Maryo Chronicles, and most of the sprites were replaced with original sprites of the same characters. Also many sounds were replaced. The removal of Nintendo assets was to avoid possible legal issues, as well as to make the game more unique, and therefore more marketable.
* In version 0.98, many sprites were replaced with original characters, roughly based on Mario.
* Version 1.0 was released in July 2007 and came with many new features including text boxes and level warps.
Version 1.2 was released on October 18 2007.
* In May 3<sup>rd</sup>, 2008, 1.5 was released.
* September 27<sup>th</sup>, 2008 saw the release of 1.6.
* Version 1.7 was released on December 25<sup>th</sup>, 2008.
* Version 1.8 was released on April 8<sup>th</sup>, 2009.
* Version 1.9 was released on 2009-08-17

A physical version of the game on disc has been released by ADVPlans, as well as on Game Power volume 1.

Somewhere around 2020, a fork of the game was made titled The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M, aiming to continue the development of the now stalled Secret Maryo Chronicles and change the goals of the project.

Possible legal issues
Although most of the media in the game has been replaced with allegedly original content, at least its title is viewed by some as a probable trademark infringement. For instance, , the game is in the Fedora Games SIG's list of games which they will not package.

Gameplay
Mechanics
SMC is very much like the Super Mario platform games in almost every respect. The main character is Maryo. The goal is to get to the end of the level, while collecting as many points as possible. He can power up using mushrooms, fire plants, ice and ghost mushrooms and stars. Maryo can also store extra power-ups in a box at the top of the screen, similar to Super Mario World. Maryo faces many enemies based on enemies in Super Mario World, including Gumba, Turtle and Thromp. The current version also features a giant Turtle as a boss character, with more bosses planned for the future.

Levels
Currently, the game features four worlds, containing eleven, two, seven, and seven levels respectively. These are loosely tied through an over-world map. There are more worlds planned. Recent versions also include many fan created levels, including recreations of Nintendo.

Music
In the install package, there is no level music, only sounds to keep the file size down. There is an additional download which provides the music..

Future
Planned for future versions are water, a story and a flying powerupas well as new bosses, new enemies and an improved engine.

Version 1.9 will include a new enemy type called spikeball.reference required
It is planning to make a level packaging system due to their large size.reference required
Also a new animation system is planned beside some smaller fixes and improvements.reference required

Level Editor
Secret Maryo Chronicles includes an in-game level editor for creating new levels or modifying old levels.
Exile is an original survival sandbox game, for the Minetest engine.

You play as a series of characters, each exiled from their homeland, stripped of all possessions, and pushed through a portal into the harsh wilderness of an accursed land.

Gameplay centers around wilderness survival: struggling against exhaustion, thirst, hunger, killing temperatures and fierce weather. Learn to survive and utilize primitive technology, and seek out the secrets of the Ancients who died here long ago.

Quick start
Gather plants for sticks and grass fiber; craft a thatch roof, a sleeping mat, and a fire. With a decent shelter and warmth, you should be able to rest on the mat to recover energy before you succumb to exhaustion and exposure. Be quick; without clothing or shelter, death comes swiftly!

Once you've mastered energy recovery, your next challenge is acquiring drinkable water, then food.
After that, you can begin exploring the world and the available crafts and technology.

History of the project
Exile was created in 2020 by Dokimi, a prolific Minetest modder from New Zealand, to explore.themes of nature, biology, primitive culture, and purposeful game design.
In 2021, Dokimi passed the project on to Mantar, and since then, the development team
has grown to four regular members and a number of brief contributors.
This is something that's bugged me with this game, it uses assets strikingly similar to, if not exactly, the ones from the original Pacman in arcades. I believe these are copyrighted by Namco, or at least restricted of use in some way. The level grid even looks identical to something you would see in the original, and these assets are included in not just the package, but the source code as well. -Blitzdoughnuts (talk) 10:14, 9 August 2024 (CEST)

Chocolate Doom is a Doom source port also compatible with Hexen, Heretic and Strife. It is a conservative port, maintaining identical gameplay and internal functionality to the original Doom, to the point where bugs from the original are recreated. Unlike the original, Chocolate Doom multiplayer uses Internet Protocol and allows online play over the modern Internet.

Chocolate Doom is compatible with the libre IWAD replacements Freedoom and Blasphemer.

The related Crispy Doom fork maintains the same general design philosophy, but with a greater tolerance for quality of life upgrades like increased resolution, interpolation, limit removal, and automatic DeHackEd compatibility.
Wake to Hell is an interactive story game, self-proclaimed walking simulator, about a former surgeon, Lukifer Dredd, coming back to the hospital he feared to finish what was left to be done. The game, like the webcomic it is based on, is a commentary on mental health and workplace stress. It was also made as a way to practice programming philosophies inspired by Drummyfish.

The game provides builds for Windows and Linux, utilizing mainly SDL2 for frontend code, but providing use of Raylib and SAF as well, although due to the game's in-development state, they have been left outdated.

It was founded 2019, using the permissive Modified BSD License and aims to expand on the Lovecraftian theme of the original Quake. It is currently missing many levels in some episodes as well as some sounds, and is working on finishing its models.
Legal issues
Freedoom versions older than 0.6.4 contain plagiarized music from mods for Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, these were found and promptly removed with version 0.6.4 released on June 15th, 2009, making versions older than that unavailable on the GitHub repository, although they can still be found in the SourceForge repository. There was also a debate on the legality of a font used on various textures prior to being replaced.
