Riichi Advanced is an online mahjong client. It supports many mahjong variants and house rules, and allows players to write their own code for their own mahjong variant and play it live.

Development
The main engine of Riichi Advanced is written in the Elixir programming language. However, variant-specific code is written as either a JSON file, or is written in a custom scripting language called MAJS (which compiles to JSON).

Gameplay
In Riichi Advanced (and mahjong in general), players take turns drawing and discarding tiles until a player wins. A player generally wins by forming their hand into four melds and a pair, where a meld is either three of the same tile, or three numbered tiles in sequence. Players may also form a meld by using the most-recently-discarded tile to complete the meld, at the cost of exposing that meld to the table, and being unable to later change that meld.

Riichi Advanced allows players to choose different variants, which can affect how hands are scored, what tiles are available, how a player can win, and what groupings of tiles are allowed to be melds.
There is another nonfree license, "steam_license_readme.txt", but this probably only applies on Steam. ** See also Wuzzy's comment about this game. Is user-uploaded media considered part of the game? Does it need to be libre as well? This concern may also apply to chat messages in Messages From the Universe Graveyard.
** Long-time ITB player here. The link above is only the server, and all of the levels only reside on it. While there is a FOSS release of this game (https://gitlab.com/sofar/insidethebox), it only contains the game logic and media files, but there are no playable levels and no music, and it requires significant reconfiguration to make it even work at all as this release is only meant for servers. The user levels on the server have never been released under FOSS licenses to my knowledge. Note I made a fork of this game called "Inside the Box SE" (https://codeberg.org/Wuzzy/Inside_The_Box_SE) to reduce the pains of even launching the game and to add libre music, but it still doesn't have any playable levels. So defacto all downloadable FOSS versions of this game are basically just glorified level editors (I will gladly accept levels for my fork tho *wink* *wink*). I don't know if this is good enough for an article. Also, IIRC the music that plays on the server is also under some -NC license. --Wuzzy (talk) 21:03, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
* Nocturne in Yellow (*) - Engine is apparently GPL (https://github.com/marrub--/GLOOME Readme clearly states that), media license seems unclear, I found this (http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=49299&start=90#p868865) post which seems to vaguely imply WTFPL. Seems like additional research is needed to confirm it, game seems rather professionally made so probably worth looking into?
* Cubosphere (*) - Claims to be free software when you exit. For practical purposes, this is a complete game with no major bugs although it's officially in beta and development is dead since 2013. License status is unclear. Almost all graphics and audio files are non-free, however ().
