Simple Sokoban
Hi, I noticed you removed my "Simple Sokoban" game. I didn't read your comment on my "talk" page until recently - I answered there, but I am not 100% sure this is where I should answer so you notice it.. This message just to be sure you will see it. :) Mateusz Viste (talk) 11:05, 13 May 2014 (CEST)
:Hello, again, took me quite a long time to notice your answer on my "talk" page :P Actually, I released a new version of Simple Sokoban yesterday. This one includes proper licensing explanations in both the tarball and binary packages. I also reflected this same information directly on the game's website. I hope its "legal status" is clear now :)
::thanks for restoring the article so fast! I was looking right now how to do it, too.
Frogatto's non-free and statement of intention
I like your work to point out Frogatto's possible non-free aspect. I read the frogatto site's "about source" page and it seems that the developers stated intention is to both love and hate OSS (not Free nor Libre) 79.177.194.69 23:39, 17 December 2010 (UTC) [sig: human right to privacy]
The biggest range you can block at once is /16. --AVRS 10:16, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
:Ok, I've been going through histories of all articles and blocking any and all vandals. Would you suggest blocking ranges instead of single IPs rather? Is there a tutorial somewhere? GNUbie 10:20, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
:: Can you make a bot using the API? I currently have a couple of scripts to generate a bookmark directory for Firefox to block an n.0.0.0/8 using an Actionaz script, but that is slow and occupies the computer’s UI. --AVRS 10:28, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
:Can't MediaWiki handle range blocking? I noticed that the IP 94.200.27.54 had spammed and clicked the block button for the IP and simply added /24 (a C-block, could be too small?) after the IP and toggle the appropriate check boxen and hit submit and was told "94.200.27.0/24 has been blocked." So, did I do something smart or something silly? :) GNUbie 11:50, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
:: You’ve blocked 94.200.27.*, that’s correct. --AVRS 12:53, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
:: Oh, actually it is silly, because (as you can see in the table below) 94.200.0.0/16 is already blocked. :) Now to unblock the IP address, you’d need to unblock both. --AVRS 12:56, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
:::Ah, only now I understood that the script was for blocking multiple /16 blocks... Boy, I'm slow. Do we really need to block such large ranges? And funny thing that block overlap, you're right. I'll remove that lil (sub)block of mine. GNUbie 13:01, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Wiki spam - whether to block users
Hi there. At https://stendhalgame.org/wiki/ we suffer from spam too :( but we found that, at least with the spam we get there, blocking user accounts is a waste of time because they don't seem to reuse the accounts. Unless you have some way to do that automatically. Do you want help deleting the pages themselves, or would you rather do that yourself to be able to monitor the IP ranges for your script? Kind regards Kymara 14:55, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Libregamewiki is back in business - want to think about some new front page content?
Hey, I was looking through the articles you'd been improving recently hoping to pick a new featured game for the front page. Do you have any thoughts on that? Kymara (talk) 12:04, 6 October 2012 (CEST)

:Excellent! One game I like is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. The article is quite short but I don't know whether that is a problem. Could even be a good thing if it would encourage participation. GNUbie (talk) 19:37, 8 October 2012 (CEST)
I don't believe that the source code is freely redistributable (a key component of Free software) - it's just under a license similar to UNIX (which is obviously not free software, since that was pretty much the spark that ignited the Free Software movement back in the 80s). == Greetings too and some questions ==

Hello. Thanks for the welcome and thanks you too for contributing to Libregamewiki. I noticed that you're the only contributor listed in the recent changes page apart from me.

I updated some release dates and added a game, but I don't know how to contribute otherwise. Can you give me advice on this?.

I think that it's a pity that Libregamewiki allow use under the CC BY 3.0, because it's not a Copyleft license. So the dual licensing it's under, is not Copyleft. An argument may be made that it allows the articles to be more easily used in news, but that's a fallacy. Copyleft licenses allows everyone to use the work, it's people who chose to not to use them, and then claim that it's a problem of the license, rather than acknowledging that it's theirs for generating non-free works. Given this condition, I could fork Libregamewiki, contribute nothing, or contribute despite the non-ideal licensing. I don't have the manpower for the first option, and it may split the already small community, which would be counter-productive. Libregamewiki does a good job listing free games, so I chose to contribute.

Do you know what's the official page of LinCity-NG? It's still listed as in several places in the World Wide Web, including this wiki, but that site is dead. I found and , but I don't know whether they're official.

I created a category (:Category:Go games) and then I realized that the convention is to use a template for categories. However, the articles of existing game categories redirect to an article with the same name in the main namespace, but they don't use <code>#REDIRECT</code>. How can I make the category I created do that as well?.

Is there a way to change my signature time to UTC?.

Who's the maintainer of this wiki? Who pays for the hosting?.

Regards.

Go is a abstract strategy game of ancient origins. The tokens have roughly the shape of ellipsoids of revolution and are called “stones”. The board consists of a grid, which has as many intersections horizontally as vertically. Boards with 9, 13 or 19 intersections per side are typical. The game is for 2 players, called “black” and “white” which have an unlimited supply of stones of their color. Players alternate turns placing their stones in empty intersections and afterwards removing the continuous groups of stones of the opposite color than have no adjacent empty intersections or passing. Players may pass at any time, but it's only prudent to do so when there are no more useful moves. The game ends when both players pass consecutively and they agree on which stones are dead (Would be eventually captured), the player with the greatest score wins. Score depends on the komi (compensation for white, for playing second), the number of stones he has on the board, and the empty intersections completely surrounded by his stones.

The exact rules are slightly more complex as it's need to specify ways to avoid reverting to a previous position in a loop, the procedure to mark dead stones as captured at the end of the game, and the method by which score is computed. Among the simplest and most elegant rules are the Tromp-Taylor rules, the American Go Association rules and the British Go Association rules (See BGA Rules, Concise AGA Rules, Complete AGA Rules. The BGA rules are equivalent to the AGA rules except for the treatment of illegal moves).

Go has an article in Wikipedia and a wiki (Sensei's Library).

Gameplay
Similar to the original game, FreeCol involves building up a strong economy while defending it with a decent military.

To win FreeCol, the player must either defeat all the other players or start a revolution and defend his/her colony against his/her former country.

Terrain types determine what kind of resources your colony can produce. The tile that the colony is located on will produce resources automatically with no colonists. For example, a forest will produce woods and furs while grassland is suitable for farming. However, a forest is limited in capacity as far as food production is concerned. The player can also improve the terrain by plowing or building roads. Plowing improves the productive capacity of farming while roads improve the productivity of mining.

The player will also need to balance food production, and produce liberty bells, among other factors. If, for example, the player does not have enough food, his/her colonists will starve. Not enough liberty bells will eventually lead to more "tories", which means the player will be further away from his/her goal of independence from their monarch.

Towns can be upgraded through time, with the necessary wood and tools. For example, they can eventually be upgraded to forts, shipyards, and other buildings.

Natives can be valuable trade partners, or hostile enemies.
How do we make it easier for potential contributors to help?
How can we make it easier for potential contributors to help? Since the beginning of October account creation works without red tape again. This is a great step forward. Is there anything we can do to further improve the articles explaining how to contribute?

Main Page
I think it may be a good idea to have a little paragraph at the top of the main page which explains what LibreGameWiki is.
:The front page links to Libregamewiki which is currently outdated, the main page could have a summary with more detail on that page. Kymara (talk) 12:31, 6 October 2012 (CEST)
Shall we have a small "How to contribute?" or "Help wanted" section on the main page which links to the relevant articles? What would it look like?
:Yes. It should link to an updated Libregamewiki:Article_policy and List of games Kymara (talk) 12:31, 6 October 2012 (CEST)
: There could also be a portal for this in the side bar. Kymara (talk) 12:47, 6 October 2012 (CEST)

Which article should be featured next?
There is quite a number of very good articles. I think we should change the featured article on the main page more frequently to draw attention to them.

:Yes, I already asked a recent productive user, GNUbie for his thoughts for the next one. Generally, we should ask the wider community to help choose somehow. Kymara (talk) 12:32, 6 October 2012 (CEST)

Engines for non-free games with no free games using them
Hi. Should free remakes of engines for non-free games be accepted as free engines, if they have never been (and not necessarily intended to be) used for a playable free game yet? Examples: OpenMW, Enemy Territory: Legacy. --AVRS (talk) 12:35, 28 November 2012 (CET)
:My two pence: I'd class those as free engines. Their use case is irrelevant, and it could be considered as a matter of timing, for example: a free engine which was created and then later used for a non-free game doesn't make the engine non-free.Kymara (talk) 12:46, 28 November 2012 (CET)
Game articles redirecting to genre list
I'm seeing odd behavior. If I try to go to the following articles:

* https://libregamewiki.org/Freedroid_RPG
* https://libregamewiki.org/PARPG

I get redirected to the RPG genre page:

https://libregamewiki.org/Role-playing_games

If I use non-rewrite links, however, they seem to work.

* https://libregamewiki.org/index.php?title=Freedroid_RPG
* https://libregamewiki.org/index.php?title=PARPG

Could there perhaps be an error in the URL rewriting rules?

: Thank you for the report. I fixed it. --Hendrik Brummermann (talk) 17:04, 8 September 2013 (CEST)

License Choice
The CC-BY is a non-copyleft license, and unless I'm mistaken, the GFDL is a copyleft license, which is why CC-BY-SA was chosen for Wikipedia when it dual-licensed to make it compatible with other CC sites. If I'm correct, this wiki is currently under two licenses which contradict each other on the question of copyleft, which is confusing. Why wasn't the CC-BY-SA license chosen for LGW? This would allow relevant to content to be imported from and exported to Wikipedia and other CC-BY-SA sites (with appropriate attribution of course). --Strypey (talk) 08:04, 11 January 2014 (CET)

: The CC-BY was chosen to make it easy for third parties to use content from LibreGameWiki. The GFDL was considered non-free by Debian and Debian is quite an authority as the Open Source Definition is based on Debian guidelines. It was kept as alternative to make it easy to copy content from LibreGameWiki to Wikipedia. Wikipedia and the FSF later pulled a stunt of releasing a new version of the GFDL with the Lex Wikipedia clause, allowing Wikipedia to move to a completely different license. LGW content, however, was licensed as GFDL 1.2 without the backdoor "or later". And personally, after this stunt, I don't think "or later" is a good idea at all. --Gamfan (talk) 08:16, 11 January 2014 (CET)

:: For the record, the change to the GFDL was made to allow Wikipedia (and other multi-collaborator works) to dual-license with CC-BY-SA, which is identical to the GFDL where it counts (eg attribution, copyleft), although it happens to lacks the "invariant sections" and "transparency" terms that made Debian declare the GFDL non-free. Both CC-BY and CC-BY-SA are free culture licenses: http://creativecommons.org/freeworks Practically speaking, the purpose of having a wiki under a license is to inform the user about what they can and can't do with its contents. The GFDL tells the user they must put derivative works under the same license (copyleft), while the CC-BY says they don't. This is confusing. Can I use sections of LGW within an ARR (All-Rights-Reserved) work or not? Is this wiki copyleft, or it isn't? If it is copyleft, shouldn't the CC-BY-SA needs to be used to let the user know that? If it isn't copyleft, shouldn't the GFDL be dropped to make this clear? --Strypey (talk) 05:49, 12 January 2014 (CET)

::: It is very simple: If you you contribute to LibreGameWiki, you must license your work as CC-BY und GFDL. If you want to use content from LGW, you can pick the license you want to comply with. Please keep in mind that copyleft is only one of the difference between the licenses (please read the full text of both licenses to learn about other demands required by each of the licenses). --Gamfan (talk) 13:21, 12 January 2014 (CET)

:::: I intended to answer, but I got an edit conflict earlier. Anyway, some points:
::::* Being CC-BY licensed, this wiki's text can be contributed to Wikipedia if properly attributed: see CC FAQ and Wikipedia copyright FAQ.
::::*Wikipedia is not entirely dual-licensed: all of it is available under CC-BY-SA (except the fairly used stuff). On the other hand, the GFDL does not necessarily apply to text added after the project voted to use the CC license - you have to check this yourself if you'd like to use a Wikipedia article under the GFDL.
::::*As I recall, Debian only considers the GFDL non-free if there are invariant sections involved, see this vote. What is the problematic "transparency" term?
::::*The lack of a "or later" clause precludes our stuff from being used in the Free Software Directory. This may be a pity, because their goal is rather similar to ours. -- StevenDH (talk) 19:40, 12 January 2014 (CET)
