ReTux (stylized as "reTux" in-game) is a 2-D platformer written in Python and utilizing media from SuperTux. It is distributed commercially, but is entirely libre software and libre culture.

Although ReTux re-uses the art assets of SuperTux, no code from SuperTux is used in ReTux. The software portion of ReTux is entirely new, written in Python and based on the SGE Game Engine.

The main game contains 41 levels split into 5 worldmaps. Each level also has a Tux doll which can be found for bonus points and 100% completion.
Tux is the official mascot of the Linux kernel and is a widely known symbol among the Linux and free software community. He is short, fat, and has yellow duck-like flippers and a beak. He was designed by Larry Ewing based on a suggestion by Alan Cox and he was named by James Hughes. He represents no known penguin, but he most looks the most like a little/fairy penguin. Due to this symbolic significance he appears in many free software games and even some proprietary ones. These games are typically non-violent and child friendly. There is an alternate mascot for the kernel, Tuz the Tasmanian devil, which was used for version 2.6.29 in order to promote support the effort to save the Tasmanian devil species from extinction due to the devil facial tumour disease, but this mascot has never starred in a game.

Tux universe
Although the games featuring Tux are each set in their own storylines or have no back story at all, there are many common elements. Most of these are based on real life penguins or perceptions of them in popular culture. Many feature Tux living in Antarctica, often with other penguins (SuperTux, Pingus, Extreme Tux Racer etc). Typically Tux and his fellow penguins are after herrings and other types of fish, and as such these are usually bonus or vital items (Tuxedo T. Penguin: A Quest for Herring, Extreme Tux Racer, Tux Typing etc). Repeated, often one-sided, references to the market and ideals conflict between Microsoft Windows and Linux and free software and proprietary software are also common in these games (XTux, Freedroid RPG, etc), similar to games like XBill.

In Pingus the penguins have to venture out of Antarctica to try and figure out the force, global warming, that is destroying their world. In other games such as SuperTuxKart and Wormux there is no back story and no real environments related to Tux or penguins, just the addition of Tux and/or multiple Tux-like penguins. In Frozen Bubble there is no back story, but graphically it appears to be set in Antarctica with a Tux-like penguin trying to save his igloo from being crushed by the downward coming bubbles. SuperTux features Tux trying to save Penny after she is kidnapped by Nolok. Freedroid RPG has one of the more creative uses of Tux in a video game - as an extraterrestrial. Tux is a member of a race known as the Linarians who is stranded on Earth in the middle of a major conflict between humanity and evil conquering "MS Bots".

Gown and Penny
In many games there is also a, sometimes playable, female side character. The most common of these being called Gown or Penny. These are sometimes hinted as being Tux's girlfriend or just close friend (they have been described as being similar to Princess Peach in the Mario series). Gown is sometimes depicted simply as a pink version of Tux (eg XTux) or as having a partially skinner figure and wearing items of female clothing including a red and white short skirt and a hair bow, according to Steve Baker inspired by Daisy Duck (eg TuxKart and A Quest for Herring). Her name is supposed to be a pun on Tux being short for tuxedo and gowns being another form of clothing. Penny in the games SuperTux and SuperTuxKart is purple and white (SuperTuxKart once featured Gown and still has a map called "Gown's Bow"). Penny has been suggested as a pun on "PENguin". In Freeciv the default female leader name for the Antarctican civilization is "Tuxette". Steve Baker, creator of A Quest for Herring and TuxKart has stated that he prefers his original character of Gown.
IceBreaker is a free software game in a similar vein as Jezzball.

The game involves collecting a group of penguins from an iceberg in Antarctica in order to ship them to Finland as they are essential to a secret plot for world domination. To move them, you must break the iceberg into chunks by creating melting lines in the ice with Special High-Tech GNU Tools. To cut back on shipping fees, these chunks must be as small as possible.

It was included in LinuxWorlds' list "Linux fun for the holidays" in 2000.

Development history
* The first beta (0.27) of what is now called Secret Maryo Chronicles was released in January 2003 under the name Super Mario Clone FX. This release featured characters, enemies and sounds ripped directly from Super Mario World, with a new game engine and original levels.
* In version 0.4 (February 2003), an in-game level editor was added, making it possible to pause the game, edit the level, and then finish the level in its changed form.
* In version 0.95, the name was changed to Secret Maryo Chronicles, and most of the sprites were replaced with original sprites of the same characters. Also many sounds were replaced. The removal of Nintendo assets was to avoid possible legal issues, as well as to make the game more unique, and therefore more marketable.
* In version 0.98, many sprites were replaced with original characters, roughly based on Mario.
* Version 1.0 was released in July 2007 and came with many new features including text boxes and level warps.
Version 1.2 was released on October 18 2007.
* In May 3<sup>rd</sup>, 2008, 1.5 was released.
* September 27<sup>th</sup>, 2008 saw the release of 1.6.
* Version 1.7 was released on December 25<sup>th</sup>, 2008.
* Version 1.8 was released on April 8<sup>th</sup>, 2009.
* Version 1.9 was released on 2009-08-17

Possible legal issues
Although most of the media in the game has been replaced with allegedly original, at least its title is viewed by some as a probable trademark infringement. For instance, , the game is in the Fedora Games SIG's list of games which they will not package.
SMC is very much like the Super Mario platform games in almost every respect. The main character is Maryo. The goal is to get to the end of the level, while collecting as many points as possible. He can power up using mushrooms, fire plants, ice and ghost mushrooms and stars. Maryo can also store extra power-ups in a box at the top of the screen, similar to Super Mario World. Maryo faces many enemies based on enemies in Super Mario World, including Gumba, Turtle and Thromp. The current version also features a giant Turtle as a boss character, with more bosses planned for the future.

Levels
Currently, the game features four worlds, containing eleven, two, seven, and seven levels respectively. These are loosely tied through an over-world map. There are more worlds planned. Recent versions also include many fan created levels, including recreations of Nintendo.

Music
In the install package, there is no level music, only sounds to keep the file size down. There is an additional download which provides the music..

Future
Planned for future versions are water, a story and a flying powerupas well as new bosses, new enemies and an improved engine.

Version 1.9 will include a new enemy type called spikeball.reference required
It is planned to make a level packaging system due to their large size.reference required
Also a new animation system is planned beside some smaller fixes and improvements.reference required

Level Editor
Secret Maryo Chronicles includes an in-game level editor for creating new levels or modifying old levels.
