Gem Drop X is a fast puzzle game. Placing gems in vertical lines destroys them and ultimately leads to completion of a level. It has been compared to "Tetris meets Space Invaders." The author is Bill Kendrick of New Breed Software.

Description
The game consists of 20 levels in which gems of different sorts move towards the player.
Placing three stones of the same kind in a vertical line destroys them as well as similar adjacent gems, which may result in a chain reaction. The larger the resulting chain reaction, the more points are earned.
For solving each level, a specific amount of chain reactions has to be triggered. The player is confronted with four different gems in the levels one to 15, in the last five levels there are eight stones.

Special objects
Special objects are triggered when an adjacent gem explodes. There are three of them:
* A bomb destroys adjacent pieces.
* Wildcards start chain reactions with all adjacent gems.
* The stopwatch stops gem movement for a short while.

Source code and development
The source code was ported from Gem Drop and is written in C. It depends on SDL, SDL_image and has SDL_mixer as an option needed for music and sound effects.

License
The source code license is GPL 2. The license(s) of the image, music and sound files is unknown.
Gameplay
In Snowballz, players can directly control combat units, but not the workers. These warrior penguins throw snowballs, as suggested by the game's title Snowballz. When a penguin dies, it is frozen in an ice cube. When a penguin gets cold enough, it will try to save itself by running back to the base igloo. At a certain time later, it will emerge with full health.

Workers automatically gather resources and perform other tasks such as building structures that support your clan.
The game is coded in C++ and licensed, including the media, under the GPL.

The latest version of Wesnoth is 1.3.8 released on September 20, 2007 while the latest stable release is version 1.2.5 released on June 15, 2007.

Gameplay
The game features different races: Dwarves, Elves, Undead, Humans, Orcs and Dragons (Drakes). Each race has their own unique characteristics along with their own weaknesses and strengths.

The game maps are structured as hex grids. The defensive strength of a unit is affected by its race and the terrain it stands on. For example, Elves have a very strong defense value in the forest.

It also has some RPG elements. Individual units can gain experience in battles. When they reach a certain amount, they level up and become stronger. With recall ability, it becomes possible to call back veteran units from earlier levels if they didn't die in combat.

The night and day cycle also affects the races' power. For example, Orcs are best at night, Humans at day.

There are singleplayer campaigns as well as various multiplayer game modes.

Factions and Eras
Faction is a group of unit types a player can recruit in multiplayer. Players select their faction before starting the game. There is also the possibility to select "Random" faction, which means that a random faction will be selected for this player. The advantage of playing with a random faction is that with fog of war, the opponent does not know the player's faction until their armies first meet.

Era is a group of factions balanced against each other. Era is selected before starting the game, and players can choose only factions from this era. The game contains three eras: Default, Age of Heroes, and Great War. The first two eras contain six factions: Loyalists, Rebels, Northerners, Undead, Knalgans, and Drakes; the difference is that Default era allows recruiting only low-level units, and Age of Heroes allows also recruiting higher-level units. The Great War era contains only two factions: Alliance of Light, and Alliance of Darkness.

Loyalists: They are mostly the humans of the Wesnoth kingdom; plus some mermen, and (in Age of Heroes) ogres.

Rebels: They are mostly the forest elves; plus human mages, woses, and some mermen.

Northerners: Trolls, orcs, goblins, and nagas.

Undead: Undeads and human dark adepts.

Knalgans: Dwarves, human outlaws, and gryphon riders.

Drakes: Drakes and saurians.

Alliance of Light: Loyalists + Rebels + some Knalgans. (Available only in Great War era.)

Alliance of Darkness: Undead + Northerners + some Knalgans. (Available only in Great War era.)

Players sometimes refer to factions as "races", which is incorrect, because there are units of multiple races in one faction (such as elves, humans, and woses in Rebels faction), and the units of human race appear in many factions.

In single-player mode, each campaign can specify a different set of recruitable units. This set can change during campaign, reflecting the campaign plot. Although these sets can be similar to multiplayer factions, they do not depend on them.

It is possible to create user-defined factions and eras, or download them as "Add-ons" from the campaign server.

Mods
Wesnoth has extensive support for mods.
All contents for the game are stored as .cfg files, which are written in WML, or WesnothMarkupLanguage.
This allows any user to edit units, campaigns, races, attributes, savefiles, user interface layout or maps.
It also allows a user to create new content, which could eventually change every aspect of the game.
Also, there is a wesnoth editor that allows users to create new maps.

Campaigns
There are six campaigns that are included with the official distribution of the game. These are:

*A Tale of Two Brothers: A beginner campaign about a knight who attempts to rescue his brother from an evil mage.

*The South Guard:

*Heir to the Throne: The first and earliest campaign as well as the most developed and popular in Battle for Wesnoth. It is about a supposed heir to the throne of Wesnoth, Konrad, against the evil queen of Wesnoth, Asheviere.

*The Rise of Wesnoth: This campaign features Prince Haldric, the first king and founder of Wesnoth.

*The Eastern Invasion: A knight of the Wesnoth kingdom, Gweddry, attempts to save Wesnoth from the undead invasion.

*Under the Burning Suns: This campaign is set in the far distant future of Wesnoth when there are two stars in the sky. The Elves in the campaign adapted to the deserts. They are different from other Elves normally found in the game.

Additional campaigns can be downloaded using the game menu.

Development and design
The game design follows the principle of KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

The game design of Wesnoth is influenced by two Sega Genesis games, Master of Monsters and Warsong. David White took some of their ideas and added his own. After the game design was formulated, he then started writing Wesnoth.

The developer community of Wesnoth also attracts a few famous developers from the general Free software and Open Source community such as Open Source Initiative co-founder Eric S. Raymond.

Wesnoth has two versions out at any time: development and stable. Development is a branch that boasts the latest features and graphical updates while stable is the maintenance release, thus getting only bug fixes and other minor enhancements. Currently, 1.3.x is the development series and 1.2 is the stable series.

Wesnoth also has one of the most active and largest development teams in the Free gaming community. Ohloh recorded the Wesnoth team as one of the largest in the world, in the top 2% of all teams on Ohloh. CIA.vc recorded 8098 commits and a commit every hour on average since it started recording 1.24 years ago as of September 9, 2007.
Release history
The Wesnoth team only release new version of the game only when it is done. As a result, frequency of releases tend to vary over years. 2004 is noted as the most productive year in term of how many releases.

The earliest version we documented so far is version 0.3.4 which was released on August 15, 2003. This version was announced on the former homepage of Wesnoth at whitewine.net.

See Battle for Wesnoth release history.
Funding
At one time or another, members of the Wesnoth team sought to raise funds to help the project. One such effort is selling Battle for Wesnoth merchandise via Cafepress. It is unclear how effective this effort is or how many items they sold. The merchandise appears to have outdated graphics for the current generation of Battle for Wesnoth.

Receptions
Wesnoth is one of the most famous video games of the Free gaming scene. Over 1.5 million downloads occurred between mid 2004 and mid 2007, including a trailer and various versions of Wesnoth.

Critics from Inside Mac Games, Game Tunnel, PCBurn, and OS Review overall regard the game in a positive light. To some extent, they note the game as having good graphics, despite its retro look.

It is also one of the highest rated game on happypenguin.org, with 185 ratings with the average of 5 out of 5.

Community
Wesnoth has a large active community at the Wesnoth forum with about 7,000 members and over 200,000 posts in their forums as of September 9, 2007.

It also has a community newspaper called the Wesnoth Observer which was created on the offtopic section of the Wesnoth forum and then moved to the wiki of Wesnoth.
The latest release is Version 2.0.8 on May 13, 2006. The game is written in the C++ programming language. Earlier versions were written in C.

Gameplay
BZFlag has different game modes. Capture the flag, Deathmatch, and kill the rabbit are examples of them. Thus there are numerous BZFlag servers hosting different kinds of games.

Players control tanks which they can jump with. Flags are items that enhance or handicap tanks' abilities. For example, there is a radar jamming flag, which jams your radar for a certain period of time. Another is machine gun, which makes evading bullets impossible at close range. Some flags are very deadly, such as the ability to launch homing missiles, making it very easy for a tank to get several kills in a row.
Development History
BZFlag was written originally in C by Chris Schoeneman in 1992 when he was a student. Some other students would also collaborate with him. Eventually they would come up with the concept of flags. Later, he rewrote the game into C++ for SGI's IndiZone contest. He won a computer for winning the Reality Engine category.
Cheating
BZFlag's open source client code has one major downside in it that makes cheating extremely easy. Even with little or no knowledge of programming, users can easily give themselves an unfair advantage over normal players by making minor modifications to the source code.

Trivia
After waiting for about one minute, a moving image of the author will appear on the main menu.

Battle for Wesnoth or simply Wesnoth is a fantasy themed turn-based strategy game started by David White in June 2003. Its graphics are using anime stylereference required. The game is coded in C++ and licensed, including the media, under the GPL.

The latest version of Wesnoth is 1.3.7 released on August 26, 2007 while the latest stable release is version 1.2.5 released on June 15, 2007.

This allows any user to edit units, campaigns, races, attributes, or maps.

Community
Wesnoth has a large active community at the Wesnoth forum with about 7,000 members and over 200,000 articles as of September 9, 2007.

It also has a community newspaper called the Wesnoth Observer which was created on the offtopic section of the Wesnoth forum and then moved to the wiki of Wesnoth.

Gameplay
A first-person shooter played at incredible speeds, with some of the most intense multiplayer combat available on any platform. Players are divided into two teams, aliens and humans, both with vastly different skills and abilities. Humans rely on technology and advanced weaponry to dispose of their alien adversaries, while the aliens rely on quick evolutionary skills to become larger and more fierce by the minute. Base building plays a crucial role in Tremulous, with an infinite combination of layouts possible across many maps. Machine Turrets, Acid Tubes, Boosters(Poison), and Armories are just some of the buildings available to both teams. Each base is controlled by a main structure(Reactor, Overmind), and players come into the game through movable spawn points. Money and Evolution Points are earned by killing members of the opposing team, and a winner is declared when their enemy's spawn points are destroyed and has no remaining players alive.

Alien team
As an alien, most combat is done up close and personal, with the exception of Grangers, and Dragoons who can spit projectiles. Evolution points are spent on evolving into stronger units with special abilities. Those include walking on walls, paralyzing the enemy or shooting projectiles.

Human team
Human players use Weapons and Items to kill. Money is spent at the armory building to buy guns, armor and other equipment.
Gameplay
In Starfighter, players fly the spacecraft firefly in different missions, shooting down various enemies as well as completing the presented objectives. The players play in top-down view mode during missions, complete with various useful stats such as shield, ammo, and others.

The game is non-linear, meaning that players do not have to complete missions in a specific order. In later star systems, players will randomly encounter enemy patrols. In some cases, players have to fly around to different planets randomly to complete a mission such as the pursuit of an experimental fighter.

Players also have the chance to upgrade their spacecraft with various weapons and the ability to buy additional ammos and ammo capacity from the shop.

As players progress through the game, they will encounter new enemy spacecrafts, boss battles, new wingmates (allies who help you in battle), and new star systems. Players also will be able to buy new weapons such as homing missiles and laser cannons.

Secret Maryo Chronicles is an Open Source two-dimensional platform game with a style designed similar to classic sidescroller games. It uses the platform independent library SDL and, since version 0.98, the OpenGL accelerated Graphics Renderer. The game is developed in C++.

History
The first beta (0.27) of what is now Secret Maryo Chronicles (SMC) was released in January 2003 under the name Super Mario Clone FX. This featured characters, enemies and sounds ripped directly from Super Mario World, with a new game engine and original levels. In version 0.4 (February 2003), an in-game level editor was added, making it possible to pause the game, edit the level, and then finish the level in its changed form. This allowed players to create new levels, and to load levels that other players have created. In version 0.95, the name was changed to Secret Maryo Chronicles, and most of the sprites were replaced with original sprites of the same characters, as well as many sounds being replaced. The removal of Nintendo assets was to avoid possible legal issues, as well as to make the game more unique, and therefore more marketable. In version 0.98, many sprites were replaced with original characters, roughly based on Mario. Version 1.0 was released in July 2007 and came with many new features including text boxes and level warps.

Gameplay
Mechanics
SMC is very much like the Super Mario platformers in almost every respect. The main character is Maryo. The goal is to get to the end of the level, while collecting as many points as possible. He can power up with Mushrooms, Fireplants, ice and ghost mushrooms and Stars. Maryo can also store extra power-ups in a box at the top of the screen, as in Super Mario World. Maryo faces many enemies based on enemies in Super Mario World, including Gumba, Turtle and Thromp. The current version also features a giant Turtle as a boss character, with more bosses planned for the future.

Levels
Currently, the game features three worlds, containing eleven, two and seven levels respectively. These are loosely tied through an overworld map. There are more worlds planned. Recent versions also include many fan created levels, including recreations of past Nintendo levels, which can be accessed via the home screen.

Music
In the install package, there is no level music, only sounds to keep the file size down. There is an additional download which provides the music. These are mostly licensed remixes of Super Mario World tunes. The music is often described as a highlight about this game, as it's very high quality and well produced, which is rare for a fan game.

Future
The game is still very much in progress. Also planned for future versions (but release date unknown) are multiplayer play, a flying powerup, and some kind of pet for Maryo to ride (much like Yoshi) as well as new bosses and new enemies.
The player sees the game from a side view. It's levels consist of a starting point, obstacles and an exit. To win a level, a specific amount of penguins has to reach the exit. To overcome the obstacles the player can assign jobs to single penguins, like building a bridge or digging a hole. When the player does not assign the penguins with tasks, they keep walking forward.
