The game is also playable as an HTML5 Web game.

Clients
Freeciv can be played via different clients, the majority of which are in an early stage of development.
*Freeciv-gtk2, currently the official and most stable client.
*Freeciv-sdl, also official, but yet unstable.
*play.freeciv.org web client, an online version of Freeciv playable in a web browser.

Gameplay
There are several ways to win a Freeciv game. The simplest is to wipe out all the enemy players. Another option is to become the first to colonize space. There is also a time limit, so if after a certain amount of time has gone by and no one has won, the player with the highest score wins by default.

Freeciv can use various sets of rules: the standard Freeciv rules, the Civilization II rules, and the Civilization I rules. However, the basic gameplay stays the same.

Development history
On November 14, 1995, the Freeciv project started, to replace the broken Openciv. The original developers were Claus Leth Gregersen, Allan Ove Kjeldbjerg, and Peter Joachim Unold. Gregersen coded the game mechanics, Unold wrote the client architecture, and Kjeldbjerg provided the graphics.

However, when the game approached playability, they lost interest and moved on to playing the game XPilot. Since then, a great number of new developers and contributors have allowed the project to grow. In May 2017 Gna! was closed and the Freeciv code repository moved to Github.

Version history
We have documented that The Freeciv project have a long and extensive release history.

Freeciv supported online play via the GGZ Gaming Zone from version 2.1 until 2.5.

Receptions
Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection is a collection of multi-platform single-player puzzle games written mostly by Simon Tatham and licensed under the Expat license. Portions of the collection are by Richard Boulton, James Harvey, Mike Pinna, Jonas Kölker, Dariusz Olszewski, Michael Schierl, Lambros Lambrou, Bernd Schmidt, Steffen Bauer, Lennard Sprong and Rogier Goossens.
Crosswords is an Android game that is based on the rules of Scrabble. Older versions are available for PalmOS and PocketPC. There is a single player mode where the player is against one or more computer opponents. Multiple player mode is available through Bluetooth or over the internet through a central server.

In addition to the default word list, additional word lists can be downloaded from online within the application. The default lists are BasEnglish2to8, CollegeEng_2to8 (the default for human players), and Top5000 (the default for computer players). A more comprehensive word list is OWL2_2to15.
The Spring Project was founded by Stefan Johansson with the goal to replace the TA engine. The Mana World is a 2D MMORPG in development, licensed entirely under the GPL, including the server software, the server data, and the client data.
There are currently plans to switch to the Hercules server which is widely used, and has more features than the current server.
Me and My Shadow is a platform and puzzle game in which the player's shadow plays an important role. The game uses only monochrome colours, fitting the shadow-theme. There is set of tutorial levels which explain the controls, tactics and puzzles elements.

Game play
The goal of the game is to reach the exit in each level. Certain obstacles and puzzle elements can only be conquered by working together with the player's shadow. Therefore the player can record his movements by pressing <kbd>Space</kbd>. Pressing <kbd>Space</kbd> again will let the shadow perform those movements. Each level can be repeated indefinitely by either dying or restarting it by pressing <kbd>r</kbd>.

The player can jump one block high. But by standing on the head of the shadow, two block high walls can be reached.

Puzzle elements
; Exist : The exit looks like a door.
; Blocks : Both player and shadow can walk on normal blocks
; Shadow blocks : Only the shadow can walk on shadow blocks, the normal player just falls through them
; Fragile blocks: Repeatedly jumping on fragile blocks will destroy them
; Spikes : Spikes are deadly, don't touch them
; Teleporters : Teleportes can be used to beam to an connected teleporter elsewhere in the level
; Swap : Will trade places between player and shadow

History
The development started in April 2009 by Luka Horvat as a Windows games. In January 2011, Omer Bahri Gordebak announced his plans to build a clone which resulted in the release of the source code by Horvat under the GNU GPL.. It is now maintained by Edward Lii.
RogueBox Adventures is a 2D graphical game that combines aspects of roguelikes and sandbox games like Minecraft. The player can fight monsters, craft tools and furniture, collect resources like wood and stone, and build a house using those resources. The game features a number of enemies and non-hostile NPCs.

Gameplay
Difficulty
There are different grades of difficulty that can be chosen upon character creation:
* On sandbox nothing happens when the player dies.
* On easy the player loses a few items after dying and all experience.
* On normal the player loses all items and all experience.
* On hard the player loses all items are returns to level 0, but the world remains.
* On roguelike the entire saved game is deleted.

There are other ways to configure the game to suit the player's preferences, such as strictly turn-based versus a hybrid between real-time and turn-based.

Crafting
An important feature of the game is crafting. Items are crafted from resources such as stone and wood. The player must use a carpenter's workbench provided at the beginning of the game in order to begin the production of other items. There are five crafting tiles: the carpenter's workbench, carver's workbench, stonecutter's workbench, forger's workbench, and alchemist's workshop.
Red Eclipse is a total conversion of Cube 2, featuring entirely free art under CC BY-SA 3.0 or a compatible license. It features many modes like deathmatch, free-for-all, and capture-the-flag. The game has a sci-fi theme and has gameplay similar to Quake-based arena games. The game uses OpenGL.

In the past there was a possibility of the game going commercial, so some files were labelled Omitted to default to the included license. It was decided that the default license will be CC BY-SA, so from then on Red Eclipse is completely libre and is now included in Debian main.
