I'm adding a deletion review as I've found some licensing issues ([https://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=18099 FGD post]): many files have unclear licenses but more importantly at least two characters are non-free ([http://www.mckusick.com/copyright.html Beastie] and [https://github.com/PureDarwin/Hexley/blob/master/LICENSE.md Hexley], their non-standard licenses allow uses only to individuals and only within "good tastes"). --[[User:Drummyfish|Drummyfish]] ([[User talk:Drummyfish|talk]]) 19:12, 27 June 2021 (CEST)

: I'm sticking my head in a hornet's nest by even trying to comment but here I go anyway: It isn't fully clear to me. The first issue being the overlap between copyright and trademark. Software, including fully free software, generally uses all sorts of trademarks. At the very least there has to be a project name, which itself brings in a trademark. These trademarks raise the same concerns as the copyright licences attached to these two characters (depending of course on local law). If I used the mascot of some project which happens to be under a permissive copyright licence in a distasteful way, then depending on country I could be just as much in the wrong as with these licences prohibiting it. In my opinion this needs to be something specifically clarified by LGW rules. If I simply fork a project then the fork could be trademark infringement if I don't replace a lot of the artwork&mdash;something which isn't generally considered to make the work non-free. If I, personally, have to follow the rules pedantically as I read them I would exclude the game but I don't think that was the intent of the rule.<br/>It also isn't clear to me how to interpret it in light of US law (where LGW was created AFAIK) which is so very permissive with parody. This means that the non-free licensing of the original characters might not apply to US distribution of their depictions in the game. :: I think you're stretching the point here a bit, [[User:FacelessLinuxUser|FacelessLinuxUser]]. The two mascots are explicitly marked all-rights-reserved, that means no derivatives either and the code license doesn't change any of that. I see your point, but it's probably the mascots' license that would have to change, not LGW policy. Still, I'd opt for communicating with the STK team - to push them to get in touch with the respective copyright holders, or remove these mascots from the default set - along with a little lenience for this specific beloved project.
::: You may well be right. Unfortunately getting special permission for STK wouldn't fix the problem&mdash;it would make the game assets explicitly non-Free. Very permissive US fair use laws for parody are a headache, because there are now two rights holders involved and one of them is using a restrictive license which the other can legally circumvent without (necessarily) passing that benefit over to subsequent derivatives. It depends whether you consider such licensing to still be Free, which is why the FSF had to act on tivoization and patents. Media rather than SW but to quote the FSF, "A free license may not require compliance with the license of a nonfree program." As I said, by my reading of the policy it would have to be excluded. (It's so strict I couldn't even upload a BSD icon for fair use.) Being patient and solving the problem over wiping the article, yes, but I don't foresee a quick solution short of convincing STK to take them out or relaxing LGW policy. :I am against deletion based on the provided arguments. They do not convince me. How far do the copyright powers of the inventors of BSD Deamon and Hexley really go? First of all, SuperTuxKart is definitely NOT using any *official* BSD Deamon or Hexley artwork (not even close). The karts are their own work of art. The original artwork is 2D, the karts are 3D. Do the powers of the copyright holders go so far that they could strike down '''any and all artwork''' that even loosely resembles the characters of BSD Deamon/Hexley? Also, in SuperTuxKart, it's not even called "BSD Deamon", but "Beastie". Beastie is only an unofficial nickname. IANAL, but I thought one of the basics of copyright is that copyright concerns ''concrete'' artworks, not mere ideas. As for trademark, this argument should be dismissed outright (as it would go too far), we should focus on copyright only. Overall, I don't like the idea that free software has to be even MORE defensive of copyright than even copyright itself. I therefore dismiss the mascot arguments UNLESS there is clear evidence that you will end up in legal trouble AND the copyright holders succeed in shutting down artwork that is only vaguely similar. STK has been around for a very long time, still no trouble in sight. I cannot talk about the "many files have unclear licenses" bit tho (server is down), so that aspect may still hold valid arguments. Here is another critical point for this discussion: The Libregamewiki:Article_policy stats: "If the official release contains non-free files, a publicly accessible completely playable free package in an operating system’s repository or on other stable site will do, but then the article must be about that version, not about the official one.". [[User:FacelessLinuxUser|FacelessLinuxUser]] ([[User talk:FacelessLinuxUser|talk]]) 20:35, 9 November 2021 (CET)

[[User:Modanung|Modanung]] ([[User talk:Modanung|talk]]) 16:42, 5 January 2022 (CET)

::::: Not the news I want to hear but unsurprising. People are rather loose with licensing. (IMO not their fault&mdash;the arcane IP system is incongruent with human nature.) Perhaps by a long chance somebody reading this has good rapport with someone in STK, or Debian, or something related to get a discussion taken seriously. Sad that there are so many good projects out there where even one single file messes with the license of the whole instead of being placed in an expansion pack. You know as well as I. :: Maybe not all representations of the BSD Daemon necessarily fall under the non-free license. Compare the Wikipedia pages for [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Daemon-phk.svg Poul-Henning Kamp's drawing] and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bsd_daemon.jpg John Lasseter's drawing] (the official one). The latter has a non-free use rationale and is not allowed on Wikimedia Commons, while the former has no non-free notice and is allowed on Commons.
So if e.g. the Debian version is 100% free software, the article must definitely stay, just a bit rewriting and it should be OK. --[[User:Wuzzy|Wuzzy]] ([[User talk:Wuzzy|talk]]) 16:15, 30 May 2026 (UTC)

== MegaMek is not libre ==
It seems to me that MegaMek is not a libre game (anymore). In the following I like to give some reasons.

- BigField <nowiki>(https://www.flickr.com/photos/wheatfields/557982013)</nowiki>

CC BY-NC-SA is not a libre license.

Splash Screen
Florian "SpOoKy777" Mellies <nowiki>(https://www.deviantart.com/spooky777)</nowiki><ref name="megamek_con"/>

The work is probably not libre. SpOoKy777 states that work in a specifc directory of his profile is free for non-commercial use and says nothing about the others<ref>[https://www.deviantart.com/spooky777/journal/IMPORTANT-INFO-FANART-USAGE-COMMISSIONS-920667722 SpOoKy777's post from 2022-06-27 on DeviantArt] acc. 2023-07-21</ref> so those have to be assumed proprietary. Therefore any work in any directory is not libre.
Base images purchased from Generated Photos <nowiki>(https://generated.photos/)</nowiki>. Generated Photos carry no additional likeness rights. All images have been generated without human intervention through machine learning processes. Any perceived resemblance of our materials to an existing person is not intentional.<ref name="megamek_con"/>

Those images were purchased and so a license was granted that allows commercial use:
Commercial Use: Images can be used commercially only if a license is purchased. We currently offer two options:<ref>[https://generated.photos/faq Generated Photos FAQ] acc. 2023-07-21</ref>
There are several restrictions for usage of the images.<ref>[https://intercom.help/generated-photos/en/articles/7872726-generated-photos-terms-and-conditions Generated Photos Terms and Conditions] especially 4.6 acc. 2023-07-21</ref> And having bought the license does IMHO not mean that MegaMek is allowed to publish those images under a libre license (if they wanted to), they remain proprietary.

They also use
UI Materials licensed from EVILSYSTEM <nowiki>(http://www.evilsystem.eu/terms/)</nowiki>.<ref name="megamek_con"/>
3. Licensing / EULA
When you purchase an product, you're actually purchasing a license to use that product.

Licensor grants to the END-USER a non-exclusive, worldwide, and perpetual license to the product to integrate products only as incorporated and embedded components of electronic games and interactive media and distribute such electronic game and interactive media. Except for game services software development kits (“Services SDKs”), END-USERS may modify the products.

END-USER may otherwise not reproduce, distribute, sublicense, rent, lease or lend the product.

It is emphasized that the END-USERS shall not be entitled to distribute or transfer in any way (including, without, limitation by way of sublicense) the products in any other way than as integrated components of electronic games and interactive media. Without limitation of the foregoing it is emphasized that END-USER shall not be entitled to share the costs related to purchasing an products and then let any third party that has contributed to such purchase use such product (forum pooling).
:If I'm not wrong, both the modern GameMaker (Studio) and the old Game Maker engines are all rights reserved, giving the game at least a bit of non-free code and data. The game would probably fit better if the GDevelop remake comes to fruition. -[[User:Blitzdoughnuts|Blitzdoughnuts]] ([[User talk:Blitzdoughnuts|talk]]) 05:58, 23 August 2024 (CEST)
== Game has several freedom issues ==

I've downloaded and played this game, and with that and some research I've come to the conclusion that this game is very problematic to have here.
* The game itself is made in Game Maker 5 (incorrectly stated as Game Maker 6.1), a proprietary engine.
* The game is based on an example project "1945" with no clear license. Assuming the engine's bundled assets, including examples, are freeware, this means the game's code was relicensed invalidly.
* Sources for non-original assets are missing or unclear, e.g. sound effects (especially OW!.wav and Ammo.wav) or fonts (including a fancy serif font, a sci-fi font, and the proprietary Comic Sans MS).
This is concerning for a libre game to have. Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking but I had to sift through the details to see just how much is wrong here. -[[User:Blitzdoughnuts|Blitzdoughnuts]] ([[User talk:Blitzdoughnuts|talk]]) 22:25, 1 January 2025 (CET)
'''Donut Quest''' is [[free software]] game for Microsoft Windows made by [[Piga Software]] for the Brogo web comic strip released on October 30th [[2006]]. It features the Brogo character Ed Donut (Michelle the mechanic's lazy, dim-witted, and donut obsessed assistant who is also known to have confrontations with spiders), as he fights his way against spiders in a donut factory.

==Development==

The game was made using Game Maker 5, on Windows 98 Second Edition. They game has been successfully tested on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, and it should run on all versions of Windows from 95 onwards except possibly Windows Vista and Windows 7. The game is avaible on Download.com and various other mirrors as well as the Piga FTP server.

Malcolm Wilson Multimedia made the graphics and music for the game. They would later do audio work for [[Alexei: Part IX]] and create the soundtrack for [[Windys]] among other work. A rewrite for HTML5 and Javascript has been mooted, possibly using [[GDevelop]].

==Gameplay==
The game is typical of the top-down scrolling genre. Enemies and collectibles come down at the player from the top of the screen, much like a downwards treadmill, this simulates a sense of the player's own movement upward. The player can move left or right to avoid spiders or collect donuts, ammunition, or health packs. The player can also move limitedly up or down for additional control.

If the player has collected a spray can of insecticide it may be used to fire clouds of it upwards to any incoming spiders, if hit the spiders will cough and fall onto their backs dead, no longer able to harm the player. The player must collect more spray cans in order to continue firing and repeated hitting of the fire button will create rapid fire.

If the spiders, while alive, collide with the player than Ed will shout out and and his health bar will decrease. If the health bar reaches zero than it will be brought back to full health at the cost of a life. If the player is out of lives, than the player's dies. The collection of health packs will bring Ed's health back up. The player must continue up through the level, which due to the way it is rendered is slightly different each game, until he reaches a yellow and white finish line. This will take the player to the next level.

Old Hairy, the final boss, appears at the top of the boss level. Once encountered, the game stops to scroll and Old Hairy and Ed's positions remains constant. The giant spider will then fire collections of large black cobwebs down at the player, which will inflict serious damage if they hit Ed. If the player reaches a high enough score by collecting donuts than the bonus level will load up. This level contains no enemies but lots of donuts.
I think LGW could be useful to also document "historic" libre games that somehow got "lost in time", as long sufficient evidence exists they are libre. But I let others decide what to do with the "Deletion review" tag. --[[User:Wuzzy|Wuzzy]] ([[User talk:Wuzzy|talk]]) 15:12, 30 May 2026 (UTC)

I'm of two minds about asking for a deletion review. On the one hand, this is not a game per se. On the other hand sandbox games tend to play loose with what constitutes a game and make use of gaming-related technology. They may also allow games to run inside the engine. If someone would, please explain how "metaverse" stuff falls within the scope of LGW. I don't see it but I might be wrong. :I see no problem with this article. I think this is close enough to be considered a "game", at least for the purposes of LGW. It may not be a traditional game, but people can ''play''. Good enough for me. While the philosophy of what the word "game" even means could spark endless debate, I don't think your arguments are convincing enough to justify a full deletion. I took the liberty to dismiss the deletion review then. --[[User:Wuzzy|Wuzzy]] ([[User talk:Wuzzy|talk]]) 15:08, 30 May 2026 (UTC)

: Checking a bit more thoroughly, the only nonfree licenses in the git repo seem to be assets/credits.ron and assets/voxygen/shaders/include/random.glsl, which collectively apply to 4 files. The music files in the repo are missing an license statement specific to those files, so one would think it would be licensed as GPL-3.0-only as specified in the LICENSE file and README.md, though of course that wouldn't apply if the music was copied into the project without permission from the copyright holders. I think the author and license information missing from assets/credits.ron should be considered a bug in Veloren, and the incompleteness of license info in README.md should also be considered a bug in Veloren. <s>Unfortunately, the only contact methods I see are GitLab and Discord, both of which require running proprietary software, so I do not plan to open issues regarding these bugs.</s> It seems like there is a Matrix bridge for the Discord, linked from the Mastodon account linked from [https://veloren.net/joinus/ this page], so I will ask about these bugs there. --[[User:Jacob K|Jacob K]] ([[User talk:Jacob K|talk]]) 20:41, 29 January 2025 (CET)
'''Veloren''' is an open world, open-source multiplayer voxel RPG inspired by Cube World, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress, and Minecraft, written in [[Rust]].<ref name="readme"/>
Its development began on May 28th, 2018 and is currently in pre-alpha. It is playable and content is being added all the time.<ref name="devblogs">https://veloren.net/devblogs/</ref><ref name="changelog">https://gitlab.com/veloren/veloren/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md</ref>

Veloren will feature a procedurally generated world with complex interactions between NPCs creating a vivid world simulation.<ref name="devblog61>https://veloren.net/devblog-61/</ref>

==Development==
Development began on May 28th, 2018.<ref name="gitlablegacy">https://gitlab.com/veloren/legacygame</ref> The project roughly follows a three month release cycle where each "stable" release serves more as a milestone than a stable version.<ref name="changelog"/> Communication for the project takes place on the Veloren Discord server.<ref name="discord">https://discord.gg/kG85dbt</ref> Development is broken into different working groups.<ref name="discord"/> A smaller group of core developers has the final say on what is included in the game and a group of admins moderates the community. Team leads organize the work within each group.<ref name="discord"/>

==History==
Veloren was created when Joshua Barretto<ref name=linkedin>https://uk.linkedin.com/in/joshua-barretto</ref>(AKA Zesterer) created a post on the Cube World subreddit about creating a clone.<ref name="cubeworldreddit">https://www.reddit.com/r/CubeWorld/comments/8m079o/cloning_cube_world_not_as_hard_as_you_may_think/</ref> Many people were dissatisfied with the slow progress of Cube World and a Discord server was made the same day.<ref name="discord"/>

==Anti-Feature==
The official server harvests global chat through a Discord relay without informing users or asking for their consent. In order to opt out, players must host their own server. The main server updates on a nightly basis so this takes extra work to replicate.
Some assets carry the NC flag. For example the [https://soundcloud.com/velorenofficial/wandering-voices Wandering Voices soundtrack] and [https://gitlab.com/veloren/veloren/-/blob/master/assets/credits.ron Vroom model]. [[User:Modanung|Modanung]] ([[User talk:Modanung|talk]]) 23:34, 19 January 2025 (CET)

: I agree the page should be deleted and moved to [[LibreGameWiki:Rejected]], but at a glance it seems like only a few files are nonfree so it may be a good idea to contact the authors of the nonfree material. Some of them have given exceptions for official releases of Veloren (See commit b24efdacdfffe5b1acbbbde6fe9d85d9f03f303e). If the nonfree material is re-licensed, would it be easy to restore the deleted page? --[[User:Jacob K|Jacob K]] ([[User talk:Jacob K|talk]]) 07:22, 29 January 2025 (CET)

::1.5 years later, and [https://gitlab.com/veloren/veloren/-/blob/master/assets/credits.ron] is unfortunately direct evidence that multiple -NC files are included, therefore the article is clearly incompatible with [[Libregamewiki:Article policy]]. The article policy does not offer any such thing like a "grace period" or give special considerations for "99% free games". I know this sucks, but those are the rules. Free software is all-or-nothing. I still think the Veloren devs should be informed about the problem because it seems it will only take a few modifications to make Veloron 100% free. Also, I think it is possible to restore deleted articles later. I will mark this article for deletion. --[[User:Wuzzy|Wuzzy]] ([[User talk:Wuzzy|talk]]) 14:22, 30 May 2026 (UTC)

The name is probably wrong and is Astroseries RTS. Astroseries is a series of games that started with 2D shooters.<ref name=astros_ofaq>[https://web.archive.org/web/20040703183405/http://www.geocities.com/astroseries/files/faqs.html geocities.com F.A.Q.], archived 2004-07-03</ref>

Although the source code was made public, Astroseries (or Astroseries RTS) is not a libre game but proprietary freeware.

The author of this article provided the information that Astroseries is under GPLv2 without giving any reference that proofs this. Maybe the author believed mistakenly the license of Stratagus engine<ref>[https://github.com/SenhorFlibble/Astroseries/blob/main/scripts/credits.lua credits.lua on GitHub] and in SourceForge package, acc. 2023-12-22</ref> and files of Stratagus project (like maps)<ref>[https://github.com/SenhorFlibble/Astroseries/blob/main/data/maps/wargus/(4)4-isl.txt (4)4-isl.txt on GitHub] and in SourceForge package, acc. 2023-12-22</ref> was the license of Astroseries. I checked all the given links in this article plus the site on SourceForge.net<ref>https://sourceforge.net/projects/astroseries , acc. 2023-12-22</ref> and the available package there. Besides the two post in VOGONS community<ref>https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=1044598 , acc. 2023-12-22</ref> where someone, who claims to be the guy who uploded astroseries to GitHub under the link provided in this LGW article, posted two images with terrain tilesets and added “GPL-2.0-or-later” to it, I can't find any indication of this project being under GPL or a different libre license. In several files I found “Astroseries Copyright Alvaro F. Perez” or “Copyright of Alvaro Francisco Perez Baneres”.<ref>[https://github.com/SenhorFlibble/Astroseries/blob/main/doc/notes.txt notes.txt on GitHub] and in SourceForge package, acc. 2023-12-22</ref><ref>[https://github.com/SenhorFlibble/Astroseries/blob/main/doc/readme.html readme.html on GitHub] and in SourceForge package, acc. 2023-12-22</ref> without saying anything about a libre license.
In the F.A.Q<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20051223191148/http://www.astroseries.com/files/faqs.html astroseries.com F.A.Q.], archived 2005-12-23</ref> of the archived website under “5. Can I make an Astroseries related videogame (with wathever tool I like)?” it is allowed to make games related to Astroseries when “3. Keep your games for free.” This relates IMHO to the universe of Astroseries i.e. making games with places, persons, people etc. from Astroseries, not to the game or it's files. And even then commercial use is restricted “NOTE: Should any commercial use arise, of any kind, contact [''email adress''], and all will be fine.” Number 12 of the F.A.Q of the old website supports my interpretation.<ref name=astros_ofaq/> There is even explicit permission needed. Numbers 16. and 17. support my interpretation that this game and the other of the series are proprietary. -- This unsigned text was added by [[User:Kribbel]] at 22 December 2023‎

:I have independently checked and I agree. There is no evidence of free licensing to be found, neither in FAQ, README or website. So our best bet is to consider this game proprietary due to lack of license (sad but true). I have therefor marked this article for deletion. --[[User:Wuzzy|Wuzzy]] ([[User talk:Wuzzy|talk]]) 13:45, 30 May 2026 (UTC)

'''''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup''''' (often shortened to '''''Dungeon Crawl''''', '''''Crawl''''', or '''''DCSS''''') is a [[:Category:Roguelike games|roguelike]] dungeon crawler [[:Category:Role-playing games|Role-playing game]]. It is written in the [[:Category:C++ games|C++]] programming language,<ref>[http://sourceforge.net/projects/crawl-ref/ Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup's sourceforge.net project page]</ref> and is licensed under the [[GPL]] Version 2+.<ref name=dcst_codelic>[https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/LICENSE License for the game in GitHub repository of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup]</ref> ''Stone Soup'' is a successor to the game ''[[Linley's Dungeon Crawl]]'' (also frequently shortened to ''Dungeon Crawl'') by [[Linley Henzell]], which was developed in the 1990's. After Henzell stopped developing ''Dungeon Crawl'' in 1999, a group of contributors kept the game alive until, in 2006, the ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' project began. The game is available in both graphical tile and ASCII versions and does not require [[3D hardware acceleration]]. The graphical tiles are largely released as [[CC0]] ([[public domain]]), but some are unclearly licensed<ref>https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/LICENSE#L23</ref> and so it is possible that only the ASCII version of the game is completely libre.

In ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' the player must delve deep into a dangerous, monster-infested dungeon on a quest to retrieve the fabled Orb of Zot, then return with it to the surface. In order to get to the Orb, the player must first collect a series of magical runes hidden throughout the various branches of the dungeon, all while encountering traps, finding magical and/or cursed items, and battling many enemies. ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' has a great many race and class combinations to play, and numerous gods to worship, all of which will drastically affect playstyle and game outcome. A lively player community exists around the game. ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' can be played both offline and online in a web browser, and there are frequent competitive tournaments.

==Gameplay==

At the beginning of a new game of ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'', the player chooses a race and class combination to play as. Unlike many other roguelikes, race has a much more drastic effect on playstyle than class, which only determines starting stats and equipment. The player must then venture through the mostly randomly-generated corridors of the dungeon while leveling up and collecting items. There are various enemies to fight, including dangerous unique enemies that have names and special abilities. One of the core mechanics in ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' is the god worshiping system. Players can choose one of several gods to become disciples of. These gods will give the player access to special rewards and abilities, but will also make demands of the player and sometimes forbid certain actions. The god that the player chooses to worship has a huge impact on the way they will play the game and how they will have to strategize to survive in the dungeon.

As the player gets deeper in the dungeon, eventually they begin to explore the various branches, some of which have runes at the end. Upon collecting at least three of these runes, the player can gain access to the Realm of Zot, which contains the goal item of the game, the Orb of Zot. Once the player has collected the Orb, they must then fight their way back out of the dungeon (a section of the game called the "Ascension") and reach the surface in order to win. There are also several other game modes available to players of ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'', including Dungeon Sprint, Zot Defense (removed in 0.16), and The Arena. It is also possible to play online and to spectate other online players. While playing online, high scores can be tracked automatically, play sessions can be recorded, and ghosts of other player's characters can be encountered.

''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' places great emphasis on game balance. Much effort has been made by the designers to discourage the practice of "save-scumming" and other grinding behaviors. The development team follows a philosophy of user-friendliness and emphasis on meaningful decision-making, originally specified by David Ploog, that is outlined in the game's manual.<ref>[https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/docs/crawl_manual.rst#n-philosophy-pas-de-faq Dungeon Crawl Manual, Philosophy Section]</ref>

==History==

''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' is a continuation of the original ''[[Linley's Dungeon Crawl]]'', which was developed by [[Linley Henzell]] in the mid-to-late 1990's. In 1999, Henzell stepped away from the project,<ref>[https://groups.google.com/forum/#!activity/rec.games.roguelike.misc/2l-5yhzS_uIJ/rec.games.roguelike.misc/rClyVtFm7KY/u4QNka1gEQsJ The End of Crawl as we know it...]</ref> and development continued for a while under a group of other programmers. Brent Ross emerged as the maintainer of the ''Dungeon Crawl'' project, and the game was updated several times in the 2000's. After the release of ''Dungeon Crawl'' version 4.0 beta 26, however, development slowed down. Another version, called version 4.1, was eventually released in 2005, but work on the game soon stalled almost completely and the maintainer ceased to be actively involved in the project. Additionally, version 4.1 of ''Dungeon Crawl'' suffered from major balancing issues which caused it to be almost unplayably difficult.

It was around this time that two developers, Darshan Shaligram and Erik Piper, began private efforts to rekindle progress on ''Dungeon Crawl''. Shaligram, who was the author of the popular "Travel Patch" for ''Dungeon Crawl'', first worked on fixing the balancing problems in the 4.1 codebase, with help from Piper, who was a very skilled player of ''Dungeon Crawl''. This strategy proved difficult, however, because of the challenging and complicated nature of version 4.1. At about this point, Martin Read, another ''Dungeon Crawl'' player, suggested on the rec.games.roguelike.misc newsgroup (which was the main hub for discussion of ''Dungeon Crawl'' during this period) that it might be a better plan to start with the 4.0 beta 26 codebase and slowly add parts from 4.1. Shaligram and Piper took this advice, and, calling their new project ''Stone Soup'' (a name chosen by Piper), began work on their new version of ''Dungeon Crawl'' in the summer of 2006. Within a few months, there was enough development work on ''Stone Soup'' to warrant a first release. Shaligram and Piper teamed up with Nat Lanza and Peter Berger, the creators of the crawl-ref SourceForge project (which was another, earlier attempt to revive development on ''Crawl''), and, in September 2006, version 0.1 of ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' was made available to the public.<ref>[https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.games.roguelike.misc/6eyToSgkY2g%5B1-25%5D Stone Soup announcement on rec.games.roguelike.misc]</ref> Other developers quickly joined to help out with the project, and Marc Thoben started the crawl.develz.org (CDO) development server, where players could test out upcoming features.<ref>[https://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/the-dawn-of-stone-soup The Dawn of Stone Soup - DCSS Dev Blog]</ref>
Since its initial release, ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' has built up a strong following of both players and developers. It was voted best roguelike game in 2008 by ASCII Dreams, beating out Dwarf Fortress, [[NetHack]], and other famous games.<ref>[http://roguelikedeveloper.blogspot.com/2009/01/winner-of-ascii-dreams-roguelike-of.html ASCII Dreams Roguelike of the Year 2008]</ref> The game was relicensed from the original "Crawl General Public License" (which is almost identical to the [[NetHack General Public License|NetHack License]]) with v0.7.2 being the last version under this old license<ref name=dcss_ol_072>[https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/0.7.2/crawl-ref/licence.txt licence.txt of v0.7.2], acc. 2024-05-24</ref> to the [[GPL|GNU GPL]] version 2+ with v0.8.0 being the first under this new license.<ref name=dcss_nl_080>[https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/0.8.0/crawl-ref/licence.txt licence.txt of v0.8.0], acc. 2024-05-24</ref>

==Development==
''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' has a very open development model. There are over 40 people mentioned in the game's credits as being part of the development team, and over 250 contributors to the game in total.<ref>[https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/CREDITS.txt DCSS CREDITS.txt]</ref> The developers communicate and decide what to implement mostly on the official ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' IRC channel, but they also make decisions by contributing design documents to the development wiki and discussing changes on mailing lists. The very open and community-oriented development model of ''Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup'' has been highlighted as one of its key strengths.<ref>[https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/03/23/making-dungeon-crawl-stone-soup-with-253-cooks-and-no-head-chef/ RPS interview with David Ploog and Corin Buchanan-Howland]</ref>
'''''NetHack''''' is a rogue-like game. It is licensed under the [[NetHack General Public License]].<ref>http://www.nethack.org/common/license.html</ref>

==Gameplay==
The player moves in turns in a dungeon, finding items and killing monsters to retrieve the fabled amulet of Yendor.

''Nethack'' has a high replay value as every game is unique; essentially every level is randomly generated, items and treasure are randomly placed with unique and functional descriptions, and monsters are generated continually and randomly. There are thirteen different roles, 5 different races, and 3 different alignments.
''Nethack'' is extremely difficult, nearly impossible. The vast majority of its players have never beaten the game.<ref>[http://angband.oook.cz/rgrn.php?q=YAFAP&w=1 only 17 first completion posts, of 877 total]</ref>
==History==
See [[NetHack release history]] for more details.

== Interfaces ==

NetHack can be played in various interfaces, either graphically or in the console.

=== Console ===
The console version is the default interface. Here, the dungeon tiles and everything in the dungeon is represented by characters.
[[Image:Nethack.png]]

=== X11 ===
A simple graphical version for the X window system.

[[Image:Nethack-x11.png]]

=== Qt ===
Some versions of NetHack feature a Qt interface using the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qt_(software) Qt] framework.

[[Image:Nethack-qt.png]]

=== Others ===
Many other interfaces exist, see [https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Graphical_user_interface].

==Variants==
The most popular variant of Nethack is ''[[SLASH'EM]]'' (Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack - Extended Magic).<ref>[http://web.archive.org/web/20080823224531/http://roguelikes.sauceforge.net/pub/nethack/variants/index.html nethacks variants]</ref><ref>[http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=9746&ugn=slashem&type=prdownload&mode=alltime&package_id=0 SLASH'EM's all-time downloads at SourceForge]</ref><ref>[http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=196&ugn=nethack&type=prdownload&mode=alltime&package_id=0 NetHack's all-time downloads from SourceForge]</ref> It features many new monsters, roles, races, items, levels, etc. It is also considered much more difficult than the original Nethack.<ref>[http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~eva/slashem/index.html differences between regular NetHack and Slash'em]</ref>

Another popular variant is the graphical [[Falcon's Eye]]<ref>[http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=29569&ugn=falconseye&type=prdownload&mode=alltime&package_id=0 falcon's eyes all-time downloads at sourceforge]</ref>. It is mostly the same as the original, except it uses isometric graphics, instead of ASCII. It has since been forked as [[Vulture's Eye]].
