[edit] Goal
White wants to use the experience gained from Wesnoth to build a GPL RPG making use of newest 3D technology, very much unlike Wesnoth itself which was rather classic 2D pixel art.[1]
[edit] Development
Parts of the game-play will remain the same as Wesnoth. For example, fights are turn based on a hexagonal field grid, but the grids are 3d now, and warped to follow a more natural looking terrain. Another difference is that cities now play a more interesting, but less pivotal role. Instead of trying to "capture" as many cities as possible to gain gold, cities are now where you spend the gold, and usually where you recruit new units.
