Oolite is a space simulation game and clone of Elite.[4] Both the source code and media are licensed under the GPL (version 2 or later).[3] Oolite is programmed in the Objective-C programming language and uses OpenGL. It is available for the Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows operating systems. This game requires 3D hardware acceleration.

Although the base game closely resembles the (some say antiquated) gameplay of the original Elite,[5] the game is highly moddable with a built-in mod manager known as the Expansion Pack Manager.[6] Enemies also have some enhancements which make the base game more difficult than Elite.[7]

Pioneer is a space adventure game set in the far future in our galaxy.

Players may choose their path as traders, explorers, pirates or bounty hunters. There are several factions, each faction having an extensive history and social system described on the Pioneer Wiki.

Naikari: Eye of Chaos is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Naikari: Eye of Chaos is a 2-D freeform space mystery game featuring exploration, trading, and combat mechanics similar to games like Endless Sky and Starsector, and a branching mystery storyline written in a manner inspired by works like Star Control 2 (The Ur-Quan Masters) and The Expanse. You assume control of a space ship and are free to advance through the game however you want.

Naikari started as a fork of the Naev project by a former contributor to the Naev project due to creative differences.[21] Other than this history, the two projects have no affiliation with each other.

Space Nerds In Space is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Space Nerds In Space is a space simulation inspired by Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator.[27] The game is multiplayer, with players managing different parts of a space ship and is intended[28] to be played in the same room, although one player can also control the different areas.

SNIS ships look and function broadly similar to those of Star Trek. Warp gates allow travel between planetary systems.[28]

Space Nerds In Space differs from both EmptyEpsilon and Artemis Spaceship Bridge by having a 3D star chart/map rather then playing on a 2D plane. [29] Also Space Nerds In Space seems to invest huge amounts of time into 3D rendered models, creating amazing graphics. (Gameplay video showing this is available on youtube) [29]
