MegaMek is not libre[edit]
It seems to me that MegaMek is not a libre game (anymore). In the following I like to give some reasons.
- BigField (https://www.flickr.com/photos/wheatfields/557982013) Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0) data/images/hexes/largeTextures/BigField.jpg[1]
CC BY-NC-SA is not a libre license.
Splash Screen Florian "SpOoKy777" Mellies (https://www.deviantart.com/spooky777)[1]
The work is probably not libre. SpOoKy777 states that work in a specifc directory of his profile is free for non-commercial use and says nothing about the others[2] so those have to be assumed proprietary. Therefore any work in any directory is not libre.
Megamek Portrait Pack Base images purchased from Generated Photos (https://generated.photos/). Generated Photos carry no additional likeness rights. All images have been generated without human intervention through machine learning processes. Any perceived resemblance of our materials to an existing person is not intentional.[1]
Those images were purchased and so a license was granted that allows commercial use:
Commercial Use: Images can be used commercially only if a license is purchased. We currently offer two options:[3]
There are several restrictions for usage of the images.[4] And having bought the license does IMHO not mean that MegaMek is allowed to publish those images under a libre license (if they wanted to), they remain proprietary.
They also use
UI Materials licensed from EVILSYSTEM (http://www.evilsystem.eu/terms/).[1]
And the Terms of Evilsystems[5] don't appear libre to me.
3. Licensing / EULA When you purchase an product, you're actually purchasing a license to use that product. Licensor grants to the END-USER a non-exclusive, worldwide, and perpetual license to the product to integrate products only as incorporated and embedded components of electronic games and interactive media and distribute such electronic game and interactive media. Except for game services software development kits (“Services SDKs”), END-USERS may modify the products. END-USER may otherwise not reproduce, distribute, sublicense, rent, lease or lend the product. It is emphasized that the END-USERS shall not be entitled to distribute or transfer in any way (including, without, limitation by way of sublicense) the products in any other way than as integrated components of electronic games and interactive media. Without limitation of the foregoing it is emphasized that END-USER shall not be entitled to share the costs related to purchasing an products and then let any third party that has contributed to such purchase use such product (forum pooling).

- I agree. Furthermore, recently it seems like MegaMek may have moved all the non-code art to a nonfree license, as stated in the LICENSE file[1]. It's possible that a fork of an older version that removes the things you mentioned would be okay. -- Jacob K (talk) 16:23, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
