Proprietary games[edit]

I don't believe we should link to wikipedia articles about proprietary games, or rather, I don't think we should link to wikipedia at all.--Kiba 01:35, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

While I support your activism, I have always felt that the main point of a wiki is to be encyclopedic. Proprietary games have influenced gaming, both free and non-free, and as such they deserve mention on articles that warrant it (such as OpenArena talking about its roots in Quake III). I don't see the point in not linking it, unless you want this site to be less usable. What is the difference between a non-linked and linked mention of a proprietary game? Nothing, except with a link people can see properly how this game has affected the free game they were just researching. I am willing to talk about this, but I still don't see the point in not linking. - Graham Wilson Piga 01:52, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
I think it would be better to make these articles as external links. Perhaps a reference sytle see also section? It look like it is hard to distinguish wikipedia links from libregamewiki links.--Kiba 01:59, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I see where you are coming from now. I do understand that it might be a bit disconcerting to click a link and suddenly find yourself on Wikipedia. However, the implementation needs thinking about. As I am writing this I am studying some of the articles where this applies, such as the previously stated OpenArena or games inspired by proprietary games such as Alexei: Part IX (no I am not trying to plug one of our Piga games :-P), to see what we can do. I could just make them external links in the traditional sense so instead of say Doom 3 it would be Doom 3, that way users would have fair warning. One question, what are your thoughts on other links, if you see my additions to the OpenArena article you will see I link to concepts as well. Do those also need clarification as Wikipedia links in your mind? Any further thoughts? - Graham Wilson Piga 05:19, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
I think any external links should be rendered as an external link.--Kiba 21:30, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Alright, sounds easy enough, I'll do that from now on. I typically don't do that on my own wikis as I see Wikipedia as the mother wiki so to speak and as such I consider my wikis as just places to go into more detail on certain topics, so I don't mind linking to Wikipedia when describing something that moves out of the wiki's field. However, I don't see anything wrong with doing it different here. I will still external link primarily to Wikipedia rather than to a proprietary game's offical website, as that way the user remains in the free content wiki universe and it is less of an advertisement of a proprietary product. I would just like to say that I am impressed with the scope and organization present here, most wikis I go to are a mess (my wikis focus hard on organization) but this one is very clean and organized. It is already a better source than Wikipedia for free as in freedom games, mostly because it doesn't have strong notability fanatics (and as such mentions perfectly decent free games Wikipedia would never mention). Sure the coverage of some major games are currently better on Wikipedia, but overall this has a better scope. - Graham Wilson Piga 21:39, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Part of the reason why I started Libregamewiki or rather why I think I could do it better is because of wikipedia's abritary notability guideline. So on this wiki, I devised the inclusion policy to be objective, based on licensing concerns. I don't see wikipedia as the "mother wiki", but rather just another wiki, abeit a very big one. I approached this effort with a businessman perspectives. Now I maintain the wiki out of the simple of the fact that nobody was good enough or better steward than me to take care of this resource and because I still want to accures revenues from this wiki so it can help fund future projects and enterprise. Without me, Libregamewiki would stagnates.--Kiba 22:00, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Since the internal, external, and interwiki links seem to all look different because of CSS only, it should be better to change the CSS, not the links. --AVRS 10:10, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, it seems that we have an open discussion on links, maybe it would be best to move it someplace else, rather than on this user page. - Graham Wilson Piga 17:51, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Bakers' photo[edit]

I am pretty sure "indexing the internet" refers to things like search engines. Maybe in (some parts of) Wikipedia it would be tolerated as fair use anyway, but I think such fair use is not allowed here, and even if it was, would not be fair/worth (not as in "fair use") to do that considering there is an e-mail address on the source page. --AVRS 18:49, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Marking edits as minor by default[edit]

Excuse me, why did you enable that option? Even page creations by you are marked as minor. Maybe I am too easily annoyed by that; I don't see why people enable it at all when they are not doing something bot-like. --AVRS 19:29, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Well excuse me for annoying you. I guess it is partly a force of (bad) habit, but it is partly that unless I do a really major edit, I don't consider that important so I call it "minor". It is in fact not default, I just prefer to downplay the status of my edits unless it is truly important. Now, I have been on this wiki for three days and am constantly being messaged, which is getting a little irksome. So unless it is something important, I would like to edit in peace please. :-) - Graham Wilson Piga 22:55, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
