Naev is a 2D space top-down shooting and trading game. It requires SDL, OpenGL, and OpenAL. The source code is licensed under the GPLv3.[1] The project was inspired by the proprietary game Escape Velocity, among others.
Story[edit]
The Universe was ripped open by a humongous explosion that destroyed Earth and the surrounding areas with billions death, leaving a highly volatile Nebula in its wake. The Empire and Great Houses have scrambled to recover after the incident that has left severe physical and mental scars on humanity itself. It is not clear what happened, nor how things will change from now own, and the player is thrust into this uncertain situation to fend for their own.
You start out in a new ship in the middle of the Empire territory, and are free to pursue missions as you please that may change the shape and future of the Universe. Conduct experiments with the technological House Za'lek, explore the depths of the Nebula to find out what happened, and what is lurking, become a pirate and raid the decadent Houses, or simply explore the universe to your heart's content, Naev is an open game where you are in charge of your destiny.
