OpenHV is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

OpenHV is a mod of OpenRA that takes the Hard Vacuum sprite artwork and loosely recreates the never released original. It is a real-time strategy game which uses supply lines for resources.[1] The first stable version was released in April 2021. It supports single-player, LAN, online multiplayer as well as map editing.[2]

Techniques[edit]

The game rules are written in the MiniYAML text format, which is loosely based on YAML before it was standardized which allows tab indention and nested values. Missions are scripted using Lua. C# is used to write gameplay logic. The game assets are loaded from PNG with added frame metadata for graphics. Standardized WAV files are used for sound and Ogg Vorbis for music. Custom maps can be created and distributed to make (co-op) missions, modded multiplayer and mini-games.

Development tools used include MonoDevelop, Visual Studio Code, Kate, Audacity, GrafX2, GIMP, Aseprite, ZeroBrane Studio, git-cola, MSBuild, Mono/.NET on top of openSUSE.
