Surge the Rabbit is a free game. This means that the source code and media files are available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Surge the Rabbit is an incomplete platform game inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog, using the Open Surge engine. While it is meant as an example game for developers to base their games off in that engine, it does come with a few playable levels.

Up until version 0.1.4 from September 19th, 2010, it was known as OpenSonic before being given a distinct identity in order to become free software (which also allowed it to be packaged on Fedora and Debian, whereas it was previously rejected), being called OpenSurge until version 0.5.2.1. They also emphasize that the underlying engine is usable for original games as well, with a custom scripting system known as SurgeScript.
