OpenCity is a 3D city building game started in 2003 by Duong-Khang Nguyen, licensed under the GPL.[1]. It's coded in C++, uses the OpenGL and SDL libraries and the OGRE rendering engine. While it's similar to SimCity, it is not intended to be a direct clone.

The last stable release, 0.0.6.5, was released on March 15th, 2015.[2]

Micropolis is a free city building game that is based on the fork of the Unix port of the game SimCity.[3] The game was released under the GPLv3 by the company EA for the OLPC project.[3] It is licensed under the GPLv3.[3]

Lincity is a city building simulation game. The latest stable version is Version 1.12.1, released on August 13, 2004.[4] It is originally written by I J Peters and licensed under the GPL.[5] It is written in the C programming language.[6] A version was included on the 100 Great Linux Games shovelware collection.

LegacyClone is an online city and economic simulator. It allow players in a persistent world to play as mayors/presidents, build factories and trade goods with other players. The latest release of the game is 0.1.4 on June 11th, 2008. It is written in the Java programming language using the Swing library.[7] The developers are Mr Matt, Daou, and SnapDragon(real names unknown).[8]

As of 2022, the game website linked from the SourceForge project[7] is defunct and not known to be archived.

LinCity-NG is a city building game that is the successor to and fork of LinCity. It is being developed by members of the Happypenguin's Game of the Month project.[12] It used the SDL library.[13]

Free Reign is a 3D city simulator written by Alexander Taylor.[14] The latest version of the game is 0.2.1 on July 29th, 2001.[15] The game is written in the C++ programming language.[16] It is licensed under the GPL.[17] It became the inspiration for the OpenCity project.
