Ularn is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Ularn (alternative title: The Addiction of Ularn) is a classic roguelike and dungeon crawler game. It is played in the terminal.

This is a modern port of the 1986 roguelike Larn. There is not much development on it lately, so consider looking at NLarn.

Gameplay and plot (excerpt)[edit]

Yor daughter has caught a mysterios illness and you must save her. Your hope is to enter the caves of Ularn which are said to be filled with treasure and in the hopes to find a remedy. You only have a limited amount of time before your daughter dies.

Unlike other traditional roguelikes, you start at a "home" level where you can enter a volcano, the caves of Ularn, several shops, your own home, and more. In the caves, you will encounter treasure and enemies. You can pick up potions, magical scrolls, treasures and fight off monsters for experience points, equip armor, and more.

The game comes with a basic help file, which explains the controls and (rough) game rules. It can be accessed with the ? key during the game (not in "special" screens like in shops).

There are several character classes to choose from, like orge, wizard, elf, rogue, etc.

History[edit]

According to Ularn’s help file:

Ularn was written in 1987 by Phil Cordier at UC Santa Cruz. It was updated in 2001 by Josh Brandt
