Sandbox games are similar to toys. They put emphasis on creativity, freedom, exploration and self-imposed goals.
List of Sandbox games
This is a list of free/libre sandbox games:
Blackvoxel is a 3D voxel sandbox game. The backstory takes place in the future, with the player finding themselves on a mysterious planet, after the crash of their spaceship.
Craft is a Minecraft-like voxel sandbox game, which is simpler than e.g. Minetest, consisting of only few thousand lines of code. It has been used as a base for several other projects. However, despite its simplicity, the game is very fast and offers a lot of features such as:
|FreeTrain||2007-06-04||Transport infrastructure game|
FreeTrain is a rail and business simulation computer game, originally created by Kohsuke Kawaguchi and inspired by the A-Train series of games. Both the source code and the graphics are licensed under a combination of the LGPL and the GPL.
Minetest is a Minecraft-like voxel sandbox engine. It is an engine that allows different voxel-based games to run on it. It's for games in which the world is made out of cubes and the player runs in the environment and manipulates it, preferably by digging and building blocks, collecting items, crafting, and so on. It can be played alone or online with other players.
Minetest Game is a simple and peaceful “sandbox game” based on Minetest. There are no goals. The player is thrown into a world made of cubes and can attempt to explore the surface and hitchhike through grasslands, forests, deserts, jungles, snowy and arctic regions, explore the seas with a boat or swim and dive, and collect various materials and craft tools from them.
Using a pickaxe, the player can dig into the depths and collect precious minerals, but a careless player can also be cooked by lava. Or the player could become a farmer or forester and plant trees and crops. Almost every block can be removed with the correct tool and with the collected blocks almost every building can be erected—only the imagination is the limit. Minetest Game has a focus on creativity, building and exploring worlds, rather than being a challenge, so the gameplay naturally is sandbox-style. There are no animals, monsters or other creatures except the players themselves.
Like most games for Minetest, this game supports online multiplayer and mods.
|Powder Toy||2019-02-21||Physics simulation|
The Powder Toy is a 2D physics simulation/sandbox game. It showcases a big number of materials such as liquids, gasses or explosives, and interactions by simulating air pressure, heat, gravity and electricity. Construction of complex machines and mechanisms is possible. Controllable stickmen can be placed in the scenes.
Users can create accounts and share their simulations. As a result there is a big repository of creations including working power plants, cities or human body simulations. Many of them are under free licenses or even public domain.
|RogueBox Adventures||2020-02-23||Roguelike, RPG|
RogueBox Adventures is a 2D graphical game that combines aspects of roguelikes and sandbox games like Minecraft. The player can fight monsters, craft tools and furniture, collect resources like wood and stone, and build a house using those resources. The game features a number of enemies and non-hostile NPCs.
Voxelands is a voxel sandbox survival game. The first aim in this game is to survive in a blocky environment, defend against angry creatures and build shelter. Almost every block can be dug and placed, allowing you to create complex structures.
Almost the entire landscape can be manipulated with digging and building. You can build the world of your dreams, one block at a time.
