Atanks is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Atanks or Atomic Tanks is a tank shooting game similar to Wormux. It is licensed under the GPL.[1][2] It uses the game library Allegro.[3] It is written in the C++ programming language.

Gameplay[edit]

The main objective of the game is to destroy all the other tanks on the map, leaving you the last one standing. To help win the game, there is a possibility of upgrading your tank with the money you earn.

You can adjust Atanks to be easier or more challenging in various ways such as changing the weather, AI, and the way finance works.[4]

Mods[edit]

With the arrival of 3.9 on August 31st, 2009, it became much easier to change sounds and colors. Thus, the author added a new section on the Atanks site, which is the adds-on section. The first downloadable mods was an alternative background.

History[edit]

See Atanks release history for a comprehensive historical timeline.

It appears that there are two periods of development history. The first period is focused almost entirely in 2003 as Thomas Hudson, who was apparently the primary developer, made many releases. However, activities ceased with the last release in 2004, which was version 1.5a. This happen in spite of the fact that he found a developer who is supposed to continue the project.

On December 17th, 2006, Jesse Smith took over project and brought it back to life.[5]
