Red Eclipse is a total conversion of Cube 2, featuring entirely free art under CC BY-SA 3.0 or a compatible license. It features many modes like deathmatch, free-for-all, and capture-the-flag. The game has a sci-fi theme and has gameplay similar to Quake-based arena games, with the notable omission of pickups. The game uses OpenGL.

In the past there was a possibility of the game going commercial, so some files were labelled Omitted to default to the included license. It was decided that the default license will be CC BY-SA, so from then on Red Eclipse is completely libre [9] and is now included in Debian main.

Red Eclipse has been converted to the much more advanced Tesseract engine. Tesseract adds features such as dynamic lighting, improved map model support, improved specular and normal map rendering, support for day/night versions, and more.

Hull Breach is a game made by Piga Software for the inaugural December 2020 LibreJam. It is a top down arcade game where an astronaut has to seal breaches in his ship using duct tape in zero gravity. First collecting the tape, the player than bounces from wall to wall to get to the leaks as they open up. Hull integrity decreases faster the more breaches are active at any given time. By convention, cracks are more likely to form on tiles with objects on them, though not exclusively so. It was written in Gambas 3.15.2 and the first release uses GTK 3 for interfaces and SDL 2 for audio. Graphics are sourced from the CC0 library from Openclipart with music from Wikimedia Commons ("The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss II) and sounds from the public domain portion of Freesound. Development tools used include the Gambas IDE, Inkscape, Audacity, GIMP and KolourPaint on top of Fedora GNU/Linux.

It is a top down arcade game where the player controls a ship trapped in the middle of an asteroid storm. The only path to freedom is a warp gate, which has already been damaged by the storm. Luckily the parts to fix it can be found by blasting the asteroids, allowing an eventual escape. The player has three lives to spend, and a new scene and gate is generated upon completing the last. Letson has since started work on the tactical role playing game Heart of Gold, though the project is now on hiatus.

It is available for the Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows operating systems. This game requires 3D hardware acceleration.

Although the base game closely resembles the (some say antiquated) gameplay of the original Elite,[23] the game is highly moddable with a built-in mod manager known as the Expansion Pack Manager.[24] Enemies also have some enhancements which make the base game more difficult than Elite.[25]

OpenArena is a FPS game intended to be a free replacement for the proprietary Quake III Arena. Both the media and the game are licensed under the GPLv2.[48][49]. The OpenArena project was established on August 19, 2005, the day after the id Tech 3 GPL source code release. A "mission pack" add-on is also planned, to take advantage of the GPL released Quake III: Team Arena source code.

Space Nerds In Space is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Space Nerds In Space is a space simulation inspired by Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator.[55] The game is multiplayer, with players managing different parts of a space ship and is intended[56] to be played in the same room, although one player can also control the different areas.

SNIS ships look and function broadly similar to those of Star Trek. Warp gates allow travel between planetary systems.[56]

Space Nerds In Space differs from both EmptyEpsilon and Artemis Spaceship Bridge by having a 3D star chart/map rather then playing on a 2D plane. [57] Also Space Nerds In Space seems to invest huge amounts of time into 3D rendered models, creating amazing graphics. (Gameplay video showing this is available on youtube) [57]

FreeOrion is a turn-based strategy game of galactic conquest inspired by the Master of Orion games. As is typical for 4X games, players have to explore their surroundings, colonize new planets, manage their economies, research spectacular technologies, build up military might and conquer their neighbors, and ultimately, the entire galaxy. Features specific to FreeOrion are the diverse fantastical species and peculiar history of the game galaxy, the design of new ships with a multitude of hulls and ship parts available after research, and the possibility of technological victory after researching transcendence.

There is an impressive in-game encyclopaedia and most things can be looked up by clicking hyperlinks in messages or through right-click menus. The encyclopaedia includes both generic FreeOrion help and backstory as well as current game info such as for example what the target population of a particular planet would be if you were to colonize it with each of the species in your empire.

The game's source code is licensed under the GPL v2 and its media under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license.[58][59]

Xonotic is an first-person arena shooter, forked from Nexuiz. The game runs on the Darkplaces engine, based on Quake 1's engine. Gameplay is also based on Quake (mainly the competitive Quake III Arena), but Xonotic adds some unique touches (for example, the rockets fired from a rocket launcher can be guided with mouse). The gameplay is very fast-paced, and includes and encourages a form of bunny hopping as well as rocket jumping (in Xonotic "laser jumping" is more common). The art is mostly futuristic, but unofficial maps exist in a variety of styles.

There are 16 different game modes (including the classics: deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag, but including uncommon ones such as a type of football[61]), 16 weapons with secondary fires, 18 official maps (and a lot of unofficial maps), and a complex HUD editor that lets you tailor the HUD to your exact preference. There are also so called mutators, that allow to slightly modify rules of each game mode.

Xonotic features integrated player statistics. The XonStat system tracks a bunch of stats, including win/loss ratio, frag ratio and average accuracy[62].

Adventures on Planet Zephulor is a side-scrolling platform shooter with a science fiction setting. Taking on the role of a stranded astronaut on a distant planet, the player has to fight through the alien environs to make it to a ship to get off world. There are no lives and upon death the player simply restarts the level, although quicksaves are provided. The game features fifteen levels in two distinct regions and five different enemy types. The artwork was initially under the non-free Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0, but was later all released under the GNU GPL 2-or-later. The game was included on the LinuxCenter Game Collection from 2004.
